Coming up empty on this on the old internets.
Does any carrier offer a pay as you go smartphone?
Is there a way to convert a blackberry to pay as you go?
Or can someone recommend a cell phone that has the best web browsing capabilities that is pay as you go?
It's a gift and I don't want to go overboard on the cost of the phone.
I'm going to pre-load it with some money/airtime and let my niece refill it later on her dime.

I've never found one but that doesn't mean they aren't out there. You might call TMobile and see if they have a deal on one.

You should look at the ATT Go-Phone plans. Both "pay as you go" and "pick your plan" get internet as "Pay per use" for $0.01/kb, and most of their phones have some version of an internet browser. You'll probably be spending at least $100 to get a really decent phone though.

Check Boostmobile at boostmobile.com
They have "pay-as-you-go" like some others at $0.10 a minute.
But you can add "wireless web" at about $10.00 a month and get UNLIMITED internet to use on the phone or on a laptop with the data cable.
One of the phone they have is a Motorola I290 at $49.99 ($5.00 airtime included). -
Three hundred bucks or so for the Blackberry 8350i
Fifty bucks a month on her dime, for everything. -
