Getting Ready to Hit the Road with Magnum

I generally averaged around 2800-3000 miles a week. That also depended on where I went and how proactive I was about getting my next load. My hometime was quite good. I could generally get as much time as I wanted and I would typically get home between 10-14 days out. If I needed to get home, they made it happen. I will say the dispatchers and the company are real good about that.

They do have a terminal in NC in Greensboro, but it is generally used as a drop yard. I would park my trailer at a self storage facility and then I would bobtail to the house.

They do have some runs through Western PA but not TO Western PA. Not sure how that will do for you.

 

Hey there GrayMist. I really don't want to give you a lot of false hope, but Magnum is not going to hire you if you live in the Pittsburgh area. The only eastern yard they have is in Greensboro, NC, and there is not enough freight running through your area. I hate to say it, but don't waste your time trying, because unless something has changed in the last couple weeks (which I doubt), they aren't hiring in the Pittsburgh area.

But good luck on your search. Maybe someday I'll see you out there.

 

Well, since it is my thread, I guess I need to jump in here.

For those of you out of the loop, I ended up getting screwed out of a 1500 mile trip (yes, over $500) because someone who was starting out at Magnum was supposed to be riding with me to NC, where I was going to train them how to use the electronic logs, paperwork, and so forth. They already had experience driving, but not with Magnum. And then when we got to NC, I was going to get my stuff out of the truck and they would proceed on as I handed them the keys to Tater, who happens to be one of the best kept trucks in Magnums fleet.

I met that person in Fargo, gave him the grand tour of the company facilities, introduced him to a couple of key people, and even took him out to dinner. The second day, he told me that the powers that be felt he didnt need a trainer and wanted to give him a truck to get going. So what did I do? I spent the entire evening helping him get his assigned truck ready, working on the lights, and even changing the bulbs in his rocker switches on the dash so he would have a good looking dash at night. When that truck left, it was 110%

The next day, I found out what the truth REALLY was. The truth was that he told the powers-that-be that he didnt feel comfortable riding to NC with a complete stranger and apparently fussed about it enough that they did just that. Funny that I was a "perfect stranger", yet he had my cell phone number before he even got to Magnum, and we had talked several times, both in emails and on the phone. Funny thing is, several days later, he called me, I asked him about it, and even though I don't think he realized what he had done, he admitted that he had said that at the office. Personally, I think he was anxious to get his own truck and didn't want to wait a day to get rolling.

In essence, I lost over $500, had one night to drive to Minneapolis, empty my truck and turn in all my stuff. Then I had to hitch a ride to NC with The Trainer (which, by the way, we had a ball). If there was ANYTHING good to come of it, it was the fact that I got to ride the "final mile" with Duke. He's a hoot!

Now, I am not going to go into this any further. It's over and it is done. I would recommend that this person let it go as well. I could very easily have helped him and made his transition even better than it was. But I didn't like being misled or lied to when I put forth an extra effort to make this happen for him. I took it as a personal slap in the face, and I doubt any debate will ever change that. I also doubt it would be wise for this person to carry this any further (and I know he will read this at some point.... so take heed). Like I said, it's done, it's over, and please refrain from emailing me or calling me for advice or assistance. It is no longer available to you.

But that will never keep me from helping others. It will just make me a little more wary of what "might come of it". Folks, whenever you can offer assistance to another, do it. Whenever someone helps you, pay it forward and help someone else. That's what sets us apart from other primates. That and the Hairy Knuckle thing..... hehehheehehe
