I'm going to ask you guys because the person that you call on the telephone for my state don't know much. First off I'm not interested in driving a semi-truck. I've been driving HotShots for 19 years non CDL. The company I drive with makes car trailers so they are not for hire. They have two new trailers that are being built that will hold for more of their product but of course they want to plate for 35000 which is fine of course everyone knows you need a CDL. My question to the representative of South Carolina for the commercial driver's license hotline told me CDL R4 semi trucks and CDL B it's for straight trucks only. So as you can see they don't know half of what they're talkin about. I know I can take the CDL skills test with the truck and trailer plated for 35000 lbs. My question to you guys is on the written test do I need to study semi truck operation considering I've never even set in one and don't have a desire to because I make the money I want to make now instead of going backwards and losing half of my pay to go drive in a semi as a new driver. Long story short if I have to go to some CDL school or learn any thing about driving a semi-truck besides the stuff that pertains to the type of vehicle I'm going to be using the extra money is just not going to be worth my time or the money put in.

Written test is boiler plate stuff. Learn for the semi because that's where the questions will be based. And yes, you can test in the equipment you will be driving. If it doesn't have air brakes, then you will have a restriction of no air brakes and most likely Auto (transmission) only.
Down load the app "CDL Prep", pay the couple dollars. And when you can run thru the 350+ questions, you will be more than ready to go get your permit. Written test are not that hard. If you have been working around trucks for awhile and have some common sense you couple probably go pass it now.

    Gonzo1300 Thanks this.

Thanks for the reply. I have been running hot shots almost 19 years like I said but the last time I was ever inside of a Class 8 truck I believe I was 8 years old and I'm 43 now.
