Agreed, but some of the stories I’ve heard over the years about what these DM’s go through as babysitters is unreal. My last one had to keep calling one of his drivers everyday because the driver needed a minimum of 14 hours of a 10 hour break. Another driver on his first load from the Richmond yard to the Colton yard left on Friday afternoon, Monday morning he’s in Alabama on I-10. When they researched his travels on Monday, they saw he drove straight down 95 to Jacksonville Florida, then got on 10 heading towards Southern California. He didn’t even have sense enough to take 295 around the west side of Jacksonville. Another driver who lived in Oklahoma, delivered in Ardmore, got empty, left the truck at the dock, got a ride out with another driver, then had his wife pick him up at the Flying J and went home to Muskogee, leaving the truck and trailer at the dock. Quite frankly, I think these stories are hysterical. And I’ve always said, who in their right mind would want a job inside an operations department of a trucking company? Just walking around our yard the other day and listening to the conversations of other drivers, the constant door opening with the chain smokers, it’s enough to make one find another career.

I've been at Abilene for 4.5 years. I've had three DMs. I've had a great relationship with all three, and they all told me I was a really good driver.
And any time I feel like letting that go to my head, I remember stories like these and realize that the bar for "really good" is set pretty low.Friend, MidWest_MacDaddy, runningman0661 and 2 others Thank this. -
i had 3 dm for the past 4 years,1st one got promoted(Alan Dan),2nd one quit and came back(Cliff),and my current dm,all of them great,4 if i count Jeff, he was my dm for a 2 weeks, worst dm ever,...by a long shot.
JohnBoy Thanks this. -
Aren’t they required to call drivers every day they (DM) work now? Even on the drivers days off? Seems like I heard that somewhere.

Been here 5 yrs now, this is my 3rd dm,1st was Walter,he got promoted,2nd was Cliff, don't know what happened, and now my current one i've had for 2 weeks, seems like a real nice guy.MidWest_MacDaddy, Lonesome and JohnBoy Thank this. -
This was the 2nd time he got fired. The *first* time he got fired (back in March 2020) was for being habitually late for work. Nice guy and I liked him as my DM, but apparently attendance wasn't his strong suit. -
Lonesome Thanks this.
