Companies currently using driver cameras...

One day it’ll be all truck companies.

 

fyi: some camera systems linked with new truck technology can detect if you are looking down too long and are distracted, detect you rolling thru a stop sign, detect too close following dist, work with the lane departure on the truck and set the camera off for all of these. if you wonder why some drivers jump out in front of you sooner than they should its so they can keep the camera from activating when they are following too close to the truck in front of them that they are about to pass. and like elogs it will all be mandated in every truck sooner or later. welcome to 1984 gentlemen, so you wanna be a trucker young man? freedom of the road. lol

 

That's pretty much what it's all about plus whatever a company has for policy beside these items.

My company doesn't want us using the phone even with a headset, they aren't too fond of feet on the steering wheel either :-}

 

Freedom of the road is not just another entry into the pro column of trucking. It carries enormous weight behind it. Trucking can suck, bad, but at least you don't have a boss looking over your shoulder all the time. The camera will kill that and with it, many drivers desire to continue trucking. One of my main motivations for getting out of the truck was my age, I am 37. I was 34 when I left and I looked at what was coming and realized that there was just going to be something I could not stand. Whether that was the sleep apnea medical card scam, new HOS rules, automation or cameras, it just seemed like eventually one of those things would catch me and that would be it. Better to start a new career while I had time.

The sad reality is that privacy is going to be more and more threatened, this will impact many jobs. Trucking is different though. You don't work an 8 hour and go home. You sacrifice, live in a truck, live off of truck stops, miss family events etc. The one big win is freedom of the road. When that goes, I see many professionals packing it in and the job becoming the same as fast food is to the restaurant industry.

 

Very well put. I feel much the same. When my freedom of not being monitored disappears, so do I. I would not take double my current decent paycheck to have a camera on me. Money is just not that important.

I think a byproduct of all the monitoring camera and sensor technologies, will be more stressed drivers. A good number of the ones with options will leave. Those without will stay under increased pressure not to make errors.

 

yup, stress and pressure are the right words, sounds fun doesnt it?

 

I'm an owner operator and I had cameras installed to save my arse.We live in lawsuit era.And I don't have anything to hide so a camera doesn't bother me.

 

if your insurance company required cameras in your truck and they were their cameras and they were tracking them, and everytime you did some little thing like go over the line because you didnt want to crowd another truck you were passing they called you to tell you that you can do better and if you dont your insurance is going up, would that bother you?

 

I used to feel the same way until I got a $136 camera citation for rolling through a free right turn at a red light when there was no traffic anywhere near my path.

 

You ran a red light, the camera did not make you do it. If you run lights, tailgate, speed excessively, talk on the phone or worse yet texting and driving then you probably won't like cameras.
I always have my own drive cameras running, one on each mirror facing backwards one forward on the windshield.
