During hot days, over 85 degrees, the epu in the truck will randomly quit working unil the truck is started manually or the voltage drops low enough that the opti-idle kicks in and starts it. All batteries and filters are brand new. Company maintenance techs claim its "driver error". Company refuses to have Freightliner dealer check it. Only happens when temp dial is set to cold side. Any ideas what the issue could be?

Hopefully they checked all 8 batteries. My 2020 truck had a couple bad batteries from the factory. It should be able to run 6-8 hours just on the batteries. You can make sure it set for INTERIOR COMFORT ON. That will make the engine start more to help keep front of cab cool. Plus it will recharge the batteries. The eapu will only keep the sleeper cool basically. Because it has no way to blow cold air out of the front dash vents. That's why you need to turn on Interior Comfort. Once the engine is running the regular air conditioner will cool cab and sleeper. When the engine stops it will automatically switch back to the electric air conditioner for the sleeper.
You should hear the fan on back of sleeper turn on and running all the time the electric air conditioner is going.
You can run the system with Interior Comfort mode OFF and it will try to keep just sleeper cool till the batteries hit 12.1volts. then engine will start and high idle for 2 hours to recharge the batteries. -
Turn every electric thing on that u can to make it run . The temp sensor are known to be way off

I can have every light on and every outlet in use and the blower for the bunk will still shut off til the truck starts.

I'm having an issue with the cooling stopping after running for long periods. I have not yet figured out any patterns or consistent fixes. But, resetting the bunk hvac seems to be the key. I turn off the truck for some short period and turn it back on. Perhaps fiddle with it a bit more. The a/c does start working again after that. Perhaps turning on the comfort mode for a short while was also involved.
Again, gotta really hand it to F/L for the superb documentation. NOT! -
My electric apu is turning off after 2-3 hours now. The company shop just checked all 8 batteries. All 8 were bad, the Optimized Idle would not start engine to recharge because it was reading 12.4 volts on dash. I would be sleeping and middle of night eApu would cut off and engine would never start to recharge batteries and even with Interior Comfort Mode ON. It would not start truck automatically.
Company shop guy said my truck is getting $2,000 worth of batteries. It's a 2020 freightliner with 244,000 miles. Last time they only replaced 4 batteries. Hopefully they will clean up the battery connections also.Last edited: Aug 14, 2021
