Sensor between box and frame that determines weight. Once the weight has been determined the computer decides when to lower or raise the axle. The driver no longer has control....With the exemption that the axle can be raised by the driver at reduced speed (less than 15 km ph )and with 4 way flashers on. Again this is all tied in and controlled by the computer.

I would honestly move out of Ontario or get out of gravel. -
We have been switching over to tandem steer dump trucks since the law passed Jan 2021.
We have one sterling tandem steer that we had for almost 4 years. It’s been a good truck.
So I found one international tandem steer near Quebec for sale and my boss went and bought it.
The two trucks with straight lift axles have been parked for the time being. We still use them when needed and go to pits that haven’t enforced the lift axle rules yet but that will change sometime.
The main reason we went tandem steer is to avoid all the complicated issues that come with putting computers and a bunch of sensors on to be compliant.
Even if we already have a lift steering axle, we still have to install computers and sensors so drivers can’t control the lift axle unless it’s under 60 kph and the four ways comes on.
I have no issues with lift steering axles on trailers, but I have heard of a steering lift axle cause a crash last year from my brother in law that works at a different company.
So we’ve decided to go tandem steer. -
So if you have a tandem steer what’s on the rears ? Just a tandem 46K set up ?
Sorry I don’t get out much....Shawn2130 Thanks this. -
Cat Sdp: yup, regular tandem 46k rears for Sterling and 48k rears on International.

Here’s a pic of a SPIF compliant 2018 truck on a job site.
This is also how it’s like when it comes in loaded.
The steering lift axle got destroyed after the second time coming in loaded.
