Reading the comments I was starting to wonder if people actually read the article. Lol.

 

Indeed it could imply increased reliance on intermodal as an end-around play against the driver shortage.

 

Adding equipment of any kind implies, by the simplest logic, a need to increase power units to run it. It can be done either by acquisition of own units or relying more on Power Only carriers.

It was mentioned that Amazon is run by shmucks, which perhaps is not 100% fair to say so, but let's suppose it is the case, then why would JB Hunt Power Only be able to secure anybody better? They don't seem to be super attractive with their Power Only division either. The last offer I was emailed was $1.98 on loaded miles while everybody else, with their own dry van trailers, was getting $3-4 dol on loaded miles on average. Then who in their right mind would want to run for J.B. Hunt? Someone who is ill-prepared to run on their own, especially, in times like these.

Power Only makes sense only in case your trailer is lost, stolen, suddenly damaged beyond repair while it is hard to find and buy another one which is something that can be experienced today.

 

They’re adding intermodal equipment, so I would guess that finding hourly employees in metro areas will be easier than if they were looking for OTR drivers or power only owner ops. 12000 containers and 3000 trailers is no small investment so it seems they have something planned.

 

JB Hunt likes to give Intermodal to Power Only carriers. I used to work for an o/o leased to a carrier that done nothing else but Intermodal for Schneider and JB Hunt. That was the worst job I ever had. I lasted there only for 3 months. Schneider was so so, most of it were 53 ft dry vans but hauling JB Hunt containers was a nightmare: only 1 out of 5 was seemed DOT complaint.
