I have tried to just stay busy! I'm not running a business or anything like that! People that operate trucks around here know that I keep my ear to the ground when it comes to matching a good driver with a carrier. Just FYI to whom it may concern! I do NOT use TTR in any way to do this. Not even in private messages. TTR report to me is like sitting down in a Petro and listening to the chats!

Let me say this on this notice issue. The average carrier today once they realize you are quitting will tell you to go on ahead and clean out the truck. I was speaking to a friend that works with a large carrier about this issue several months ago. Carriers have a problem syncing these notices up with their freight lanes and try to avoid having a driver abandon a truck, (it happens more than you know). I think it is a (redacted) shame this crap has got to this point. My words do not describe small carriers. I am strictly speaking about megas!

I know a couple guys who quit where I work and were later rehired. One thing they had in common ... they both gave notice when they quit. This company will not even begin to consider a possible rehire if they quit without notice.

I never understood this. If a company is bad enough I going to quit, why on earth would I ever go back? I mean if it's a seasonal job that's one thing. A permanent job on the other hand.. Well, I quit for a reason. I would never go back. If the grass ended up being a lot less green at my new job I'd go to a third job. I would never go "backwards".

There are many things a driver knows they will be fired immediately for if they get caught. So the employer should give a notice then? Same as there are things a driver should quit for without notice.

Actually no. My whole contention is if it's moral for a company to fire without notice, no matter the reason, why is it immoral for an employee to do the exact same thing?

It's understandable once you see the two primary reasons this happens. First, sometimes a carrier loses a customer and a driver loses a dedicated account. This is the primary reason. I know several drivers that did this. Then once the carrier got another account the drivers went back. Another reason is a driver can't get along with their dispatcher. They quit and later find the situation was fixed.

So if the a driver tests positive on a random, the employer should give them a week or two notice? Don't think any notice would be given, no more so than if a paycheck bounced and the driver quits without notice. Moral has nothing to do with either one.

    Why give notice?
I can only see a few reasons to give notice.
    1. Trusted boss that you feel obligated to.
    2. You don't care if they let you go early or keep you out longer.
    3. Ability to tell future employers you gave notice.

Many companies will fire you if they realize you are looking for another job.
There have been stories on TTR of people being let go 1000s of miles from home because that is where their replacement was at.
A friend with a bad shoulder couldn't do new flatbed work they wanted to start so out he went at a truck stop far from home so the new driver could get in. No warning, just see ya.

Companies don't have compassion for drivers so it's silly to think drivers owe them anything.

Personal I feel a weeks notice is fine and allows you to tell future employers you gave notice. On the other hand if they f-you over than 15min before your start time works as well:p

You know, It almost seems we are saying the same thing....
Neither the company nor the employee should have to give notice.
