I’ve been running the X15 since they first came out. First impressions were that it was a great motor, stronger in the bottom end than the ISX, stronger jake, seemed great... but now, not so happy with them. I’ve got 25 of the X15 performance series 525HP 1850TQ motors. To date I’ve had 5 declared dusted and rebuilt under warranty by my local Cummins shop, 2 more are currently awaiting rebuild kits to get in so they can be rebuilt do to dusting, another 4 that had dust in them, but were out of warranty by the time we became aware of the dusting problem and started looking closer at them. And currently have one been in and out of Cummins 3 times now for cylinder misfire codes they just can’t seem to figure out, they keep guessing and throwing cheap parts at it instead of diving in and actually figuring out what’s wrong. I have a sneaking suspicion that one is probably dusted too. And another currently sitting in my shop that lost cylinder 1 just yesterday with only 260,000 miles. That’s right 10,000 miles and 3.5 weeks off warranty and it blows up, thank you Cummins...An even bigger problem is that it takes 6 weeks to get rebuild kits in to get these dusted motors fixed because they have so many dusted engines coming in they can’t fix them quick enough. And Cummins wants the motor tore down before the parts are ordered! that’s 2 months down if I let them do it that way! Luckily, my Cummins shop was willing to front load the rebuild kit cost so that the truck wasn’t down more than the usual 3 weeks. Of course I had to flat refuse to give them my truck before the kits showed up to get them to do it, but hey they did agree to it so that’s a plus. I am praying that that these X15s last longer than to ISXs did, but I’m not holding my breath. I haven’t had one ISX make it past 530,000 before needing to be rebuilt, and other than that one, none even made it past 490,000 before blowing out the head gasket. Anybody else having similar issues with these X15s now that they’re getting some miles on them?

Is dusting due to a Cummins defect or a defect on the OEM side?

Is dusting meaning actual dust getting in and causing damage or just plain engine failure?
