@Hurricane69 I replied hours ago, but it wouldn't post. Thank you for that explanation.

Side note, my helper is having fun.

Pulled this from my dashcam... edited to speed up and cut out some pauses. Not clue what led up to it dropping. When he immediately shaved the glad hands off the nose of the trailer, it kind of eliminated any chance of a timely outcome or anyone in the amassed crowd being able to offer much in the line of assistance.

My buddy had the same thing happen to him at 4am last Monday morning also in a 579. I was on the phone with him when he was checking his lights and the jaw on the 5th wheel, when he pulled out, the trailer came right off his truck, but he caught it on the frame. Got lucky and was able to get back under it with 48k of load on.

When your tail-frame is higher than the trailer you don't really have very good odds of getting back under it again..........

If you have chain and blocks you do. Chain around 5th wheel, and hook into 5th wheel plate making a cradle. Lift it with the air ride. Reset and add blocks. Cranking dollies down some everytime. If dollies are damaged just block them too. It can be done. Lots of dirty, hot work. But can be done.

He had lots of options (and people willing to help out) but panic reacted instead of assessing. There was a phone call between the first ram and the 2nd, assuming dispatch said to drop the air in suspension, and he blindly did that and rammed the 2nd time.

My first and only (hopefully) loaded drop onto the last inch of frame was right in front of the boss's office window 23 years ago. I paid the school of hard knocks tuition bill by painfully cranking, and can still vividly remember low range skipping gears every 1/3 crank. I was lucky I got out of it without breaking an arm lol. Truck was spring ride, so I didn't have any air assist tricks that day.
