I've been an O/O for abt 6 yrs, I have my own LLC & insurance. If I want to get my own authority, what steps do I need to take, & are there steps i can skip since I do have insurance & my LLC.
    Thanks in advance

OOIDA has step by step a list that you can download. If I remember correctly, you don't even have to be a member to get it. But, it's worth signing up, it's cheap and they sometimes have some pretty good discounts.

I expect being an o/o for 6 years, you are an OOIDA life member?

that is the first thing to do.

Just get on fmcsa website, fill out package, pay $300, file boc-3 $25, consortium, ifta, do you pay your own ucr? $50, pretty much sums it up. It’s probably something I’m missing but I’m sure someone will add it

Form 2290 HVUT. And single O/O is required to have a third party outfit to handle the clearinghouse. Consortium should be able to help with that. Also truck decals, and if truck's in his name, but he's operating under the LLC, he'll need a lease agreement carried in the truck. OOIDA can email a generic copy.

Edit: OP, what all DO you have so far?

The insurance needed for own authority is different from the one o/o have when leased on to a carrier. Those leased on have what is called bobtail and physical damage insurance.
The insurance for own authority is more expensive, more complex and available after you were issued your own DOT #.
It consists of at least 2 coverages:
    1. Auto Liability. For a new authority it may cost $12 000 - 30 000 (as some reported here)
    2. Cargo $1000 - 2000
Then you may or may not need
    3. General liability $300-500
    4. Physical damage and theft. $800-3000

Commodity plays a role in getting your own authority. Are you going to haul hazmat?, there's a bunch of additional requirements needed for that.

    Good luck,

Like @TallJoe said, insurance and cost should be your first focus, the rest is just procedural. Being based in MS, the cost shouldn't be that bad. Beside the usual factors of driving history, experience, and credit score, what you plan to haul and how far a radius will also determine what you'll pay.

Once you know what your insurance cost's will be, OOIDA will be your guiding light to the rest of the steps needed, good luck...
