as a beginner, always start off in the lowest gear that is normal, not a higher gear because when you take your cdl road test, the examiner may ding you stalling out in a higher gear, so that can be a bad habit.

when you start driving on your own after you get your cdl, then learn how to drive the truck better ... i.e. floating gears and starting out in higher gears.

As for the clutch, when you get near a light push it in half way to take it out of gear and when you stop, push it to the floor to hit the clutch brake to put it into gear to start moving again.

Thank you all for your advice. It's been two days since I wrote this post and I am starting to get the hang of it. I can finally feel the truck pulling now so my takeoffs have been getting smoother starting on third. Thanks again all. I haven't stalled the truck in two days.

It’ll be easier if you stop starting in 3rd. Don’t try that loaded, especially when facing uphill.
