Out of your exhaust i assume your talking about, has it been idling all night when it does this? How does the engine run under power? Does it have good pick and go or does it really strain ? What kind of diesel are you running it with? lots of different scenario's here which i won't get into right now, if it has lost power best take it to a qualified mechanic to run a diagnostics test on it.

Blue smoke is from unburned fuel. At higher RPM's it appears to go away only because there is a slightly higher compression at higher RPM's. The the concern is what does the smoke smell like. Be concerned when that blue smoke smells like sesame seeds. (to know what sesame seeds smeels like, go to a grocery store and smell a loaf of rye bread) If it smells of sesame seeds it is a sign of burning motor oil.

White smoke depends on the when did it smoke? Starting a diesel when it is cold with out proper preheating the engine / air / fuel and the engine will create a fog bank. If your a you tuber, search claggy diesel start. If you have a youtube channel, do a claggy start to get alot of views.
However, if your getting white smoke while in operation, start watching your coolant level! White smoke is a sign (when the engine is up to temperature) that your burning coolant.

It wouldnt hurt to get your local mechanic (unless you are it) to do a compression check. A engine with low compression and high miles will be more smokey. Good luck and let us know what you discovered.

I have a 1997 Peterbilt with 12.7 Detroit, it smokes blue and white on start up, when the truck has been parked overnight, smokes really bad for about 15 min (all trucks smoke a bit at start up, this is more than usual) all this started right after when I had the engine rebuild, been driving for more than 20k still doing the smoke at start up since day one. Really bugging me everyone around me gives me a stink eye when I start up my truck, wish I could fix this.

White smoke is usually water related, and blue/black is oil related.

Blue smoke means oil is being burned.
White smoke can mean any number of things. Air in the fuel system is one of them.
    Black smoke is unburned fuel.

    TonyG Thanks this.
