Back when I was driving a frontend loader trash truck I used to start my days at 1am. I remember this one morning I started my route a couple hours early because I had to be off early for an appointment. At about the 4th stop I got caught at a R/R crossing off of SE Clay and Water Ave in SE Portland Oregon. I remember pulling up and stopping at the crossing arms. My morning coffee had yet to kick in so I layed my head down on the steering wheel thinking I'd hear the dinging bells from the crossing arms stop and then id be on my way. I woke 30 minutes later. Arms up, no train, and here i am sitting in the middle of the road. Breaks set and and hazards on. Talk about a bad place for a nap. Thank god it was not during the day....

Too bad, Patrick Swayze used to be on the forum. He'd be the one to ask.

I never have seen the black dog but hear its bad when you do and time to stop and get some sleep. I have always seen #### like people walking ahead on the shoulder then realize closer I get it was only road signs. Been a few times I would stare and it was like my eyes were open but then i would open them and realize they were shut. Kind of confusing to explain. But dangerous all the same. Amazing I hadnt rolled a truck yet really. Came close twice. But knock on wood hasnt happened yet.

I hear those really cool trucker cut-off gloves like Patrick Swayze wore in Blackdog can help.

And if Meatloaf asks you to haul a load of guns to NJ, don't do it.

I've never taken chemicals to stay awake, but done some really stupid runs using caffeine drinks to 'help'. I've hallucinated some very spooky things, some which sent chills down my spine and made me stop. In broad daylight I've seen herds of antelope which weren't there, lots of wildlife which were just shadows, I really think I saw a black dog once, although it wasn't like the movie in the sense that it wasn't running down the road at me and it was broad daylight. A couple of times I thought I was going to run into the back of a stopped gravel truck on the highway in front of me, and just before impact it would disappear. A couple of times in the wee hours of the morning I've seen rows of text scrolling down my windshield, like the credits to a movie or the beginning of star wars. One time it was red text and it took me a while until I could focus enough to read it and when I did, it just said, 'stop! stop! stop! stop! stop! stop! ... scrolling down across the windshield. That one scared me enough to stop, get out of the truck and seriously think about my situation. If I recall correctly that was the last time I ever pushed myself that hard. I had driven 1700 miles straight through with an 8 axle rig, a lot of which grossing out at almost 140,000lbs.

The old timers hauling ore to Texas always told me the Bear(or dog) was that shadow of something you thought ya saw right before you snatched on the wheel and rolled her:biggrin_25521::biggrin_25521:

Those that had seen said bear(or dog) didn't share their experience, they just took their lumps and learned from them.

And where can I get me one of those cool sets of gloves:biggrin_2556: Mine wore out and I'm startin' to get calluses from the wheel:biggrin_2551:
