I actually like my job. I make decent money. My job is to ensure the farmers product is put on the market, and they are able to continue milking. I've been in the dairy industry in different roles since 2009. I've always had work and money. I'm home daily, some consider this a bad attribute but I certainly do not. My YTD is $34k, and yes I work allot of hours... so do other truck drivers though.

    Things I love:
    -Home daily
-Farmers. Most are great people. I consider them friends after almost 4 years. We have a great working relationship.
-decent money if your willing to work for it
    -my truck
-being independent. The short time I worked for Werner, I watched the trainer punch the Qualcomm because dispatch was pissing him off. Management rarely bothers me.
-plants, when they are functioning properly. It's like a meeting place for drivers, a social gathering lol.

    Things I don't like:
'Farm driveways in the winter, they often aren't proactive enough. When they plow they do nothing else making a sheet of glass on a driveway that's often sloped. I carry coal ash to combat this.
-plants, when things aren't going well. I've sat at a plant over 8 hours when its screwed up. My employer does pay detention if I sit more then 2 hours.

I'd say the pros outweigh the cons by far for me. Why so much dislike towards this particular form of trucking? I've heard allot of negative comment from multiple sources over the years.

BecUse it’s not steering down the highway for endless Mind numbing hours.
Milk is A real job! My nephew just took over dairy farm and works diligently to move snow for ease of entry of milk and feed trucks. Your arrival is greatly anticipated and much required
Not a job for prima donnas and panty wearing girly boys

I don't recall ever hearing anybody bashing Milk Haulers. It sounds like a great job to me. Keep up the good work.

Thanks. I have heard people call it a low class job and I just wondered why. The short period of time to was with werner I once had a million mile Werner "supertrucker" refer to milk truck drivers as not real truckers. It was a break room discussion I was having, I announced i was only doing Werner for a short period of time and intended on hauling milk. I do remember that distinctly. I also do see allot of people come and go here, some probably are prima donna people.

I recieved milk as a plant worker for probably 5 years before I got a CDL. Strange thing, I've known a number of the drivers before I got my CDL. Some of them I've known for years. When I first started my job almost 4 years ago, I got a few that said what are you doing here lol. I said, what does it look like I'm doing. Delivering milk.

    NavigatorWife and bentstrider83 Thank this.

Next time, just ask them if they know how to shift a 10-speed.

People been picking on farmers for eons, and if they only knew. I'm sure some folks actually believe milk comes from the back room at Walmart. I come from N.Wis. and the biggest deterrent there is pay+ long hours. Many outfits still pay "farmboy" wages, if they can get anyone at all. It's a tough job, 20 below morning, 6:30 am, here comes the milk truck ( mostly Kenworths) I did a short stint, my friends parents ran a small milk hauling outfit in the 70's-'80's, 2 single axle trucks, very local, but they got a Mack tri-axle with an increased area and wanted me to run it. I spent all day with this guy, some pickups were really small, maybe a couple dozen cows, those ma and pa farms are all gone now. He dropped me off at 4pm, and still had to unload like 2 hours away. He typically didn't get home before 9pm, all for $7.25/hr. ( at the time, maybe $15/hr. today) I've worked at a couple farms, good people, give you cookies, a meal, and in the event of a breakdown, what better place than a farm? There could just be someone waiting in the milkhouse too.( the urban legends were true) Many times, in rural areas, the milk truck driver is the only person these farmers saw all week. Once, my "trainer" said, "this next farm, will be a young girl waiting in the milkhouse, she's like 16, never left the farm, and the parents wanted the driver to "hook up with her",,,sure enough, we pull in, there she was( nothing happened,,,but could of, I bet)
Today, those little farms have been bought out by the "megas", with thousands of cows, and only buy the farms to get rid of the manure, a seldom talked about subject. These mega farms produce MILLIONS of gallons of waste. Just pray they don't dispose of it in your area.
