Stumbled on to this site while researching companies I might apply to. Most of the last 12 years I've been driving for a Garage Door Manufacturer who decided to pass the transportation to an outside carrier last summer. Real bummer for me as I had no dispatcher, fleet manager, safety department to deal with or answer to. Also had meals and motels paid for on my overnight and 4-5 day runs. I tried working for Averitt Express but found it was just not a good company for me. Underpowered trucks that won't do the speed limit in many of the states I was operating in, their dress code and uniform policy, automatic transmissions and fueling policy were the main reasons I left. From my research I've come to the conclusion that underpowered slow trucks are the norm for all the BIG companies.
I've got just less than 30 years experience. First job was pulling containers in and out of Oakland, California, driving a needle-nosed Pete with a 230 Cummins and a 5 and 3 twin stick. Thought I was in hog heaven when I moved up to driving a can van with a 318 Detroit and 13 speed.
Moved to Washington state and drove 11 northwest states in tractor-trailer-pup rigs,, flats mostly for about 5 years. Those were all pretty good years even though it was during the national 55 mph speed limit era.
Moved to Arkansas when my 2nd marriage fell apart and went to work for a chicken hauler, married a hoosier gal and taught her to drive. For two years she'd cry everytime we came home because she missed Indiana. We team drove for TSMT during Desert Shield/Desert Storm (the first Gulf War) hauling mostly munitions. Moved my dear wife back to Indiana during that period where she's been very happy ever since.

Yes Sir, like many of us here, the big companies just do NOT cut-it. You'll need to search out that smaller company (you already know that) that has trucks that are TRUCKS. Best of Luck finding one, but they ARE out there.
Driver287 and kickin chicken Thank this. -
Yes, I know they are out there but locating the ones that are good to work for is a difficult task. You can not get a lot of feedback on companies like say Pierceton Trucking, Laketon, IN or Metzger Trucking , Silver Lake, IN.
jtrnr1951 Thanks this. -
Well you can pull their safety record up !! safersys dot org

Driver287 Avoid Metzger trucking at all costs unless you like running 800 to 900 miles a day and paying them to polish the wheels on thier own trucks. They pay percentage on loaded miles only and think nothing of deadheading you 350 400 miles for a load. They are father & son co. the drivers are the only non family there. Try taking a problem with dispatch to safety and you will be told my brother would't do that.If you play it there way thier fine if you question anything they do you will be treated like**** .And the way they treat 0/0s not enough room for that here. I could go on for ever after 7 years there PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
