so It sound's like the Mack I showed with a 505 and 3.79 rears would be ample around here. I've been driving big trucks for a little over 6 years and most of that experience is with heavy equipment, I just haven't ever spec'd a truck out before or paid attention to what I was driving in terms of motor and drive train so I am trying to figure out what is what. Thanks for the input guys! but one question. how does big hp mean i can't get down a hill without burning up brakes? Doesn't that come down to gear selection before you start the descent?

Sorry for not clarifying , some drivers think if you can pull up in 6 th then 6th will get you down with out brakes but we know better. I only drove one truck that had a jake that would hold better than it would pull ( 12v 71) all others , top out and drop 2-3 gears in order to stay off brakes much, considering its same grade and most of the time it's not.

I have a 435 ISX. It's kind of wimpy, but it's got ISX Jakes. I pulled the Vermont "Scenic Route" 125 a week or so ago. Said it wasn't recommended for trucks, but it didn't say prohibited, so I rolled on it. Had to pull it in 4th gear, and I thought for sure I'd have to drop to 3rd, but I made it to the top. Down the other side was a 12% grade. I took it in 6th, and only had to touch my brakes a couple times. At the end of that was a 15% grade for about 1000'. I did have to lightly stay on the service brakes in 6th for the entire duration of that, but it didn't last long.

But for normal roads, 6-7% grades, I never have to touch the brakes in a high gear, even though I may have to pull it in 7th. Once that ISX gets up to about 1,700rpm, it takes a lot of hill to overcome those Jakes. They are strong.
