I don't think a truck should wait till the bitter end to merge, especially if cars are around. You're looking for an accident that doesn't need to happen, no matter who gets the ticket in the end. Wasted time dealing with it.

Gonna be at least another 72 hours before I get back into my truck. Hoping it gets done by Monday night. My ears are tired of hearing "not sure", "maybe tomorrow" and "don't know".....
Time for rhinoceros sleep.Dale thompson, homeskillet, lovesthedrive and 6 others Thank this. -

Some will tell you that what you did is the correct way, others will say you were wrong. I lean to the later... The reason is that as long as traffic is in one lane single file it will flow much faster and safer than idiots trying to force a merge at the last minute.
Just today I was in a 10 mile backup. Most everyone was single file and it was flowing at about 35 mph... Then about 50 vehicles dexided to zip up the empty lane, about 8 mins later flow dropped to a crawl for nearly 30 mins. Then it picked up to about 35 mph again. Once again 50 or so vehicles came zipping up the empty lane and flow again came to a crawl. A few of us were trying to block the open lane but 4 wheelers and even a few trucks would just go off into the dirt to go around...
As stated above by someone else... It goes much faster when everyone just gets into the lane that will remain open. Unless you are going to take an exit BEFORE losing the lane your best bet is to get in line like everyone else.JolliRoger, Wasted Thyme, Dale thompson and 11 others Thank this. -
