Why are the camshafts going out so often, are they bad design, or a maintenance related? At what miles or hours do you see them going out at?

Hollow crap.

Most commonly between 300k and 500k.... 500k is when we trade trucks so beyond that i dont know. -
Common rail cam is hollow and the camshaft is made in the states or near here. The camshaft for the non common rail is shipped from Sweden.
Also, they care less about the common rail cams. My dealer ordered 3 and all were damaged! They never tied them down or use any sort of protective around the cam. There are two staples right under the cam... and they love denting the cam!Cattleman84 Thanks this. -
Y'all know more than I do about these engines so here is my question.
Have a tap tap under valve cover before I bought the truck used. Dealer adjusted valves, didn't help. They replaced #6 injector. Tapping stopped. I bought truck, ran it for about 6,000 miles. Tapping has returned. Removed valve cover couldn't find anything wrong other than it makes the tap tap tap noise.
Any ideas?Matt1924 Thanks this. -
I just had my pressure sensor and harness deleted from the common rail. This is a solution that the brains at Volvo came up with in February, 2021. It also involves a reprogramming of the computer, so it won't read it as a failure.
Since the delete on my D13, my power and MPG have improved. -
If the computer can't tell what the fuel pressure is then how does it know how long to open the injector to deliver the correct amount of fuel??
