My SFI admin/recruiter whatever you want to call him called today about a truck shortage. The original plan we had was I was supposed to pay $5,500 for a used truck in June and lease on to F2F but that seems to be scrapped at the moment. He called saying there’s a truck shortage and used trucks are becoming available and selling within the hr so to combat this shortage they’re only leasing used trucks to drivers going to Schneider or Landstar. So I would have to get a new truck but there’s a 6 week wait and if I get a new truck my deposit would be double. 1. I don’t want a new truck the lease term is longer and the balloon payment is way more. 2. I don’t want to pay 10k for a leased truck at that point I might as well just buy a truck. So after talking to him and thinking over all my options I decided to pay $500 for a used truck lease on to Schneider and then after a month or 2 pay $5000 and transfer to F2F I still end up paying the $5500 I was going to pay any way I’m just fast forwarding my O/O plan. Has anyone heard of this shortage?

Well everyone is seeing rates high, so theyve been buying trucks. Couple that with chip shortages slowing production of new, yeah that does it

It’s a seller’s market. Save and wait for a buyers market

I'm confused. SFI recruiter? But you were going (through them I'm assuming) to lease a truck that you would presumably lease to purchase to outside carriers? Is this correct?

My boss ordered two new T880 Cummings x15 engines and 18 speed manual transmissions. He is still waiting on them, I know he ordered them over a month ago. I'm kind of praying I get one, I'm tired of this paccar engine. Its gutless for milk hauling, it doesn't like hills too much

Warning.
Im with SFI currently. Im 3 months from the end of the first lease on a brand new used (20k mi at signing) kenworth. Stay away from SFI, I'm turning in the truck at the end the lease and walking away to a dealership for the next one.
It's been outrageously messy working with them. I did the first 16mo running the Schneider load board, saw a lot more money than I'd ever seen in my life but then noticed they were canceling loads (accusing the customer of it) and removing loads I'd preassigned because "i didn't do a proper trip plan and couldn't make ontime pickup or delivery" heck i trip plan 50mph so a 500mi trip is 10 hrs..but my truck is unlocked so i can do 80 if i wanted to so that trip is closer to 7hrs if i can keep the doors closed. So "proper trip plan" is a crock and an excuse for Schneider to pull the load, assign it to a company driver and bank the profit themselves. Sure it sounds like hyperbole but i stewed on that possibility for months, didn't just shoot from the hip, i watched the percentages. Math y'all.
So halfway through the lease i got hazmat and twic and tanker and $1400 to move to Landstar, been freaking better off since.
I saw, even in the pandemic, a 30% bump in gross weekly pay, not to forget the enormous (in comparison) fuel discounts provided.
Dang, short story that took a while to tell.
But go to Lone Mountain, Arrow, find TEL, CAG, your local credit union with an SBA 7(A) loan package, and use that $5500 to get into a $55000 used truck that you'll pay off with double monthly payments in a year while still putting $2000 a month aside for maintenance fiascos and and and you'll stay away from the cloister fork that is Lease Purchases with 24% apr. Madness
Then go to the dealership with trade in and cash to get yourself into a brand new $22-2600mo truck or put all your money in a maintenance account except what will keep you from starving and fix that old kenworth peterbilt to the spec you need to pass all levels DOT inspection with rainbows coming from your ##*Last edited: May 27, 2021

Normally I'd laugh, but with the cost of new trucks, I could see how there could easily be a shortage of used trucks. Business wise, it may be a good idea to start with a new truck lease, find out if it works for you, that way, you aren't straddled with a truck repair 1st thing. And used trucks, ANY used truck, is going to need repair. It's why the last owner got rid of it. Good luck.
