I am not sure what type of employment your looking for, are you looking for local driving gigs or some other position in the trucking indsutry? More information is needed to help you out, or at least I need more.
Do you live near a large metro area or more off the beaten path? There has to be something out there and if you can provide more details I am sure given a couple of days most of the more experienced drivers here can come up with some good suggestions, especially if you would/will post your endorsements and a brief history of your driving experiences.....IE:tanker, doubles, flatbet, etc. -
Assuming that you have a good driving record, then you need to get out of the mindset of driving over the troad, and look into things that run more loacl. Check into companies like ABF and other LTL carriers that run in the area. You might start with them as a driver on a peddle delivery run, but could get into one of their linehaul positions after a while. it is going to involve night work, because that is when the majority of LTL freight moves, but that is an option.
Another option is something like Sysco, Roundy's, Nash Finch, or one of the other food distributors. They are always looking for drivers for their work, which can run fron one or two day out deals to daily deals where you service restaurants and institutions in the area. If health and exercise is a concern, those jobs do provide something other than sitting in a seat as you make the deliveries.
Depending on the area you live in, there may be work doing local work in a smaller than 18 wheel truck. Keep a close eye on the local paper, and don't just read the "trucking jobs" section of the help wanted ads. Sometimes you will find an ad looking for a driver in other sections, where a company is not primarily a trucking company. In my area, the local scrap metal company hires drivers, but their ad never makes it into the trucking section of the ad page, but always in the 'general help wanted" section.
Of course, though it can be seasonal, there is always dump work and concrete truck drivers. Again, they might not be advertising in the paper, but doing a few visits locally can dig these jobs out of the woodwork.
There is more to life than OTR work, and many of the deals outside of OTR are better than many people realize. It's just that the jobs aren;t as easy to find as the OTR work, and the companies with this work don't flood the market with ads like the OTR people do. Best of Luck!! -
New York - with your experience I would think that you should be able to get on a local - they're out there....
Best of luck - I'm new to trucking and after 2 years that is my plan... -
Maybe, but always remember one thing about local work. It's dependent on the local conditions. There may be a small economic downturn that affects that particular area, and didn't have a broad base across the country. As an example, a large factory shutting down 2-3 years earlier could easily fill up any available jobs and devastate a local economy.
Local jobs are out there, but they can be somewhat trickier to find. -
If you can do flatbed work Maverick just might fit the bill for you.
I've talked to some of their drivers and where you live you'll probably get home weekends and could make up to about $65,000 a year. -
Local driving seems to be a good way to go with your experience.A lot of ex truckers are dispatching, maybe something to ck.into.
