Hazmat border crossing

Depends on the load and the requirements. Your average hazmat load, not really. Don’t need to stop at rail crossings like you do stateside.

 

You have to stop for R/R crossings in Quebec unless they are exempt.

 

Check online to see if there is any restrictions on where you are crossing.
Ambassador bridge is no hazmat.
There is one class that is restricted at Bluewater.
And I think you are supposed to notify the peace bridge about a hour before you cross.

 

Yeah it's not really the border that has a problem with hazmat. More of bridges and tunnels to get to some of them. Always a good idea to do a Google search to make sure there is nothing special about crossing somewhere with hazmat. Last thing you want is any undo trouble hauling hazmat.

 

You can't use the tunnel in Montreal with dangerous goods on board. Not sure if its still the Fontaine tunnel, they have a way of changing names of main roads etc after a local election. Bridges are not a issue.

 

They opened Ambasador Bridge, Windsor-Detroit for few months ago for some hazmat freight. I'm puling right now an automotive load of door assemblys with airbags , pyrotechnic cartridges ,Class 9 I'll cross in Windsor . I've been crosding this loads for many years via Port Huron/Sarnia only. Years ago I used to pull garbage from Ontario to Michigan , we could exit in Port Huron only, and only return empty through Windsor, but over past months I have seen garbage trucks entering USA in Detroit. A couple of weeks ago in came into Canada with a load of corrosive ckeaning materials, not sure what hazmat class, and had to go via Sarnia.
