I'd try Jones before Landstar.
slow.rider Thanks this. -
I know this is an older post.
I'm at Greentree now and have been at Landstar.
I pulled a van at Landstar and would never go back. Just to much of the good ole boy stuff. I did do well there, though.
I'm currently at Greentree pulling a flat. I actually pulled a step until 2 months ago, although there is absolutely no problem with a step here. I was looking for a new trailer and found a deal on a flat I couldn't pass on, especially since I was pulling mostly flat freight anyway. I have a friend at Jones pulling a step doing just fine and a few others at Greentree doing well also. We may pull contract or brokered freight. No hassles from any agent/broker here. If you find a load on a broker board that you like, you can use a trusted agent for your regular % or go directly through the group and make an extra 4%. It really is that easy. A lot of the bigger carriers will claim you can do that, but if you do, they make it a hassle.
More things between Jones and Greentree. We do use the same agents/brokers and my dealing with all of them have been nothing less than exceptional. Jones has kind of a crappy CSA score, though. Prepass wouldn't even turn my buddies Prepass on. I love being bypassed at California scales at Greentree. Not sure how the rest of the companies are here. I rarely get a red light anywhere.
Another quick note on Landstar. Another friend of mine had been at Landstar for about 25 years and swore by them. I insisted there was better. I did almost go back, but just couldn't pull the trigger. Anyway, they cancelled his lease about 4 months ago. He leased on to a hopper company and still can't believe how much better life has been. He found out everything I was saying had been true.slow.rider and Speed_Drums Thank this. -

My suggestion would be Greentree over Jones only because Jones has a crappy safety record and I love my green lights. We all have access to the same freight and agents.
If you like hazmat, Greentree is ok, but ATI or Hotshot Express may be a better fit. Greentree is limited on the type of hazmat and the other 2 can do everything.
Oh yeah, still here and right now, I don’t see any change in sight. If you want more info, feel free to pm with your number and I'll answer any question you may have.Speed_Drums and slow.rider Thank this. -

A Fedex driver called in on him. The Fedex driver just kept on in the passing lane. He finally had room to pass on the right and did. Maybe closer than he should have, I don't know since I wasn't there. They never would allow him to see a video Fedex claimed they had.
Rates have been real good this year for everyone. I will also say, Landstars' rates have been lagging a bit, although they are beginning to come in line with what I've been seeing all year. Not a slam, just what I've seen and heard from Landstar drivers. Mercer is another one that's just coming up on their rates. I have friends at both companies and if we pull the same load, I was making quite a bit more until recently, as much as 25-30%. Now within about 5%, but still lower. I am only comparing flat or step freight.Last edited: Jun 3, 2021
