I know this thread is a little old,but Smallpackage, can you elaborate on the process for registering and insuring, most of the insurance companies say they require a cdl to insure a class 8,even though its a single axle under 26k gvw.
    Thanks

Completely false and speaking from experience.
I have no CDL and have insurance through progressive. The insurance is commercial insurance, it is the only way to get insurance.
Was never even asked about a CDL

And I am plated as a commercial truck as I would have had to remove the fifth wheel to register as a RV in Ohio.
Laws will vary from state to state but all you need to follow is your home state, regardless of where you travel

Hmmmm been using my class 8 truck to pull my fifth wheel RV for years. I just cover my #’s with not for hire and travel around the country not a big deal and don’t get bothered. I just write my mileage down when I use it for personal use so I don’t track IFTA.

For most, not all, Not For Hire would only be half of the equation.
Non-Commercial Use Only on the side of the truck is recommended as well, at least I would recommend it

I am just sharing What I have done for the last 20+ years right of wrong. Nebraska is my base state. Motor carrier in NE is the one that told me to do what I do to be legal. Other states may not recognize what I do. But headed to British Columbia CA, hopefully they haven’t changed the regs in the last 5 years

You are a bit different because if you have #’s that need covered you obviously are a commercial carrier first. You cover the numbers when not using that purpose and that’s all you need to do.
But for most they don’t have a CDL, that’s where the Non-Commercial Use only would come into play.
if you live and are plated in Nebraska then all you need to follow is Nebraska law, regardless of where you travel.

My truck is plated as a collector truck. Insurance through Hagerty. I don't have a CDL

Thanks for all the responses, I should of said I'm from Texas as well, I will be using it to pull my race cars in a big enclosed.

Rocket Scott, is your collector truck a class 8 with air brake?

Not to sure if NE requires a CDL
My mom and dad use a W900A model to tote the RV and he let his CDL go 15 years or so ago. Never been hassled. But yeah it sounds like a patchwork of regs snd laws that could be a pain to navigate in some states
