WA has a hard on for 1 ton trucks pulling trailers over 10k
If your Grandma made you lunch for hauling her junk to the dump they will tell you that you're now commercial
ETA: Here is the WA DOL flow chart, which doesn't actually follow the law:

Collector truck shows have entrance fees. There are prizes awarded, but I don't know if any shows have monetary prizes. There's a difference between winning money and getting a ribbon -
And I believe that show trucks would be required to have a CDL.
Anytime money comes out of your pocket or goes into your pocket makes it commercial. -
We could actually both be right depending on where we are, the laws vary from state to stateTTNJ Thanks this. -
Totally agreed and it also will depend on how it sold to the officer. Knowing what to say or not to say is key.

Your local drag strip 3 miles away with those 100 cars I doubt have cars trailered in 53’ trailers being pulled by a class 8 rig. If they did I would submit a CDL is required.
Most of those cars are trailered using a totor home, which is registered as a RV or by at best a 1 ton pickup that would not require a class A CDL.
Either way a DOT# and not for hire would be required. -

Not aguing with you or @RocketScott. You guys got it down with your local laws and know what you can and can’t do.RocketScott Thanks this. -
It's totally a gray area that depends on the state and whichever Barney Fife you're talking to. It took me hours to get plates for my truck. I had to explain the law to the person at the DOL multiple times. The average cop has no clue, that's why I have the laws printed out and offer a roadside seminar entitled: "Collector Trucks and You, the law enforcement professional"
RVs are going to be a bit different, but the process is the same. Read, read, read all the laws. Check internet forums specific to what you are doing. Go back and read the laws again. Get to know the laws so well you can quote them. One word can change the interpretation of a law profoundly, know all of them

Fast forward 15 years and a 30 something year old state trooper who is a friend of one of my nieces inherited a ‘77 Kw from his recently deceased dad who had adopted him. This guy came out to look at a steer and saw all the trucks and starts telling us about the truck and how he love’s it but can’t keep it because commercial this and that and he doesn’t care to get CDL just for it. I showed him the regs and plates and he was floored. He had no clue.Jackdonkey and RocketScott Thank this.
