You're OFF DUTY.
Are You "On Duty" Riding Your "Off Duty" Motorcycle to do a 2 minute "check" on the Reefer?
Nowhere to Park near Your Home 20 or required to park on Company Yard?
You'll Do WELL!

In the latter 2000 decade, I had a "thought" about pulling Reefers till I had a "chat" with a Chap at a local Shaffer Yard.
He said "You Need To Do Temp Checks On The Unit During Your OFF DUTY/HOME TIME"!
I said "Thanks For The Info" and stayed with Dry Van and Flatbed.

I don't know about the logging, I will leave that to all the others. I will just say this. I hope you are leaving that "LOADED" trailer in a VERY secure location. If not you stand the really REAL risk of finding those seals and locks gone as well as the load&Trailer. Reefer almost always points to food products of some kind being on that load. Might as well put a large sign on the trailer asking for it to get broken into.

How about just looking at the truck from across the street? Is that supposed to be on duty?

My understanding is, routine activities that take less than five minutes dont require change of status. That leaves the drive to and from as a grey area. Come up with some other off duty activity nearby so you can claim you just stopped by to check the reefer on the way. Maybe just wheeling your bike around the neighborhood qualifies.

When it comes to the world of trucking. You have the letter of the law/rule, the spirit of the law/rule, and you have basic common sense! Think about this for a bit!

Personally. I wouldn't log it as on duty no matter what. I mean like it's been said. It'll take you less than 5 minutes to see the set/box temps and fuel level. If anyone asks. You forgot something in the bunk you needed to grab.

I really do t want anything to do with work when I’m off. Think I’d have my company text me what they expected so I had some documentation. It’s not the checking on the trailer. It driving there and back. By the time you decide to do it and get back home two hours are gone.
