can imagine if such a law exists in Cali that if there is no emission control device on the exaust of an APU that it would be illegal as well. They are rather strict on that stuff.

    Article Excerpt

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) recently compiled idling regulations that are in effect in various jurisdictions across the country. Because these are all local ordinances, it is very difficult for fleets to know what laws govern idling. As a service to the industry, ATRI has given permission to Fleet Equipment magazine to publish this compendium.

The following information is for reference purposes only and should not be relied upon for regulatory compliance. Although every effort has been made regarding both accuracy and current status, the information may contain errors and omissions and is subject to change. Actual state, county or city codes should be referenced for specific requirements. Online users may access these codes on ATRI's Web site and click on the individual regulations listed.

A "cab card" with all this information is available from ATRI at its Web site: www.atrionline.org/research/idling/Truck_Idling_Regulations.htm.

I think I found my answer here: http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/truck-idling/truck-idling.htm

    ------------------
As a follow up to the existing in-use idling airborne toxic control measure (ATCM) adopted on July 22, 2004, the Air Resources Board, on October 20, 2005, approved a regulatory measure to further reduce emissions of toxics and criteria pollutants by limiting idling of new and in-use sleeper berth equipped diesel trucks. The regulation consists of new engine and in-use truck requirements and emission performance requirements for technologies used as alternatives to the truck's main engine idling.
The new engine requirements require 2008 and newer model year heavy duty diesel engines to be equipped with a non-programmable engine shutdown system that automatically shuts down the engine after five minutes of idling or optionally meet a stringent oxides of nitrogen idling emission standard. The in-use truck requirements require operators of both in-state and out-of-state registered sleeper berth equipped trucks to manually shut down their engine when idling more than five minutes at any location within California beginning in 2008.
Emission producing alternative technologies such as diesel fueled auxiliary power systems (APS) and fuel fired heaters are also required to meet emission performance requirements that ensure emissions are not exceeding the emissions of a truck engine operating at idle. Specifically, the regulation requires diesel APSs installed on 2007 and newer truck engines to control particulate matter (PM) emissions by either routing the APS exhaust through the PM trap of the truck engine or by retrofitting the diesel APS with a verified level 3 PM control device that reduces PM emissions by at least 85 percent. Fuel fired heaters installed on 2007 and newer truck engines are also required to meet the Ultra Low Emission Vehicle requirements specified in the Low Emission Vehicle regulations. These requirements are effective beginning in 2008.

My wife and i was in Massachusetts and a officer gave us a ticket for idling. We rolled the windows down in 80 degree weather and we was tossing and turning all night. My wife was complaining about getting bite by few mosquitoes. The next day she had like 3 bites. One of the bite marks swelled up and she came down with a fever. She then later next day had a seizure which she's never had a seizure before.... She went to hospital and after many viral and bacterial tests they said she had viral mengitus. She was bite by a mosquito and she was placed on Life support and nearly died. When she came back to life and woke up, she didn't know who she was. She had to learn to walk, talk and all.. we are lucky she didn't die. This is all because in 80 degree weather being sleeping nearly naked to not suffocate. No wind breeze no air circulation without the 80 degree blowing. This is state of Massachusetts problem my wife almost died cause if the liberal laws. I am here again and have no windows opened. I'll be dammed if I get West Nile or a creepy spider or such in my truck. When I get back home to Texas I'm gonna quit driving over the road.

No, you're wife almost died because you don't care enough about her to spend the money on an APU for your truck, or to work for a company that provides an APU.

It's not like these anti-idle laws are either secret or new.

They might not be new laws, but they are deeply immoral, and reflect a terrible lack of sensitivity/awareness on the part of the well-compensated, privileged legislators and unelected regulators who pass such laws, and the equally well-compensated, heartless police who coldly enforce them before going home to their air-conditioned beds at night, blissfully unaware of the stress and problems they cause for millions of working class Americans with these poorly thought out laws and regulations.

It's death by a million cuts in America, and idling laws is one of them.

If he already wrote the ticket why turn the truck off? That was your big mistake. You think he sits in his police car without it idling? You are in control of your own comfort. I could care less about idling laws, for one I don't idle, and 2, a ticket wouldn't stop me if I had to.
