The best thing to do is call your dispatch and ask the procedures with that company . You don't want to cause problems that will delay a shipment . My carrier does what nothbamatrucker suggests . We get a company photo I.D. made at orientation . That has always been accepted .

My company also provided us with a company photo ID that is accepted at most places.
Also, in NE, you are given a paper copy of your license, I was told to get it lamenated and to use that one if I ever have to leave an ID.
There was only one shippers that I went to that I had to do that, but, it was because they had had some issues with stolen trailers or something and it was an actual police officer at the gate. We had to leave our licenses and on the way out they checked things over and gve it back to us.
There was a driver who created a stink bout it, they had him pull over to the side, anyway when I was leaving he was surrounded by LEO's and DOT's they were going over his logs and inspecting his vehicle. Don't know how it turned out for him.

It's all about the insurance. Many major companies know they can be sued if they let someone without a CDL take a load out and kill someone's family. So they require drivers to show it. I never had anyone take mine or copy it, but you can forget about a lot of big corporation loads if you don't want to show it.

Rick, can I have your CDL please. Are you aware that from simply handing me that, within 6 hrs I can have a bank account, credit card, store charge, phone line, cell service, and purchase a car. Hell I've got friends who from that little bit of information can ruin your entire life in under 90 minutes.

I never give my SS number, and unless it's an absolute I never give my DL number. Although I do have some agriculture customers where they require my DL number because the USDA requires it to be on the paperwork. Even then, I write the number, not them, it never leaves my hand.

Again, it goes back to my original comment. If the officer wants to hold onto it, then the officer is going to be answering my questions. I don't care what agency, Dept., etc. he works for. Even with my background, I pick up/deliver loads from secure places (US Mint, Military bases, Federal Facilities) all the time. I have never been asked to leave my license with anyone, and I'm sorry but it if they want me to, they will need to answer my questions or I'll call dispatch and tell them I'm refusing the load.

See my above comments about this.

I pulled up to a gate. 4 guards with submachine guns walk up to me. "License and proof of insurance." I give it to them and they look them over and hand them back. I get out of the truck and sit on a bench. 2 guys climb into my truck and go through my stuff. They tell me to proceed. I go foward to a big metal gate. Gate lowers into the ground and I drive up to the next gate. Gate behind raises and then gate in front lowers into the ground.

4 guys with submachine guns walk up and I have to get out of the truck. 2 stand by me and 2 of them go through my truck. I drive to a fence and meet some guards. They open the fence and I drive up to a big steel beam. They tell me to get out of the truck and go inside. I go inside, remove my belt and my shoes and place them on a conveyor belt. I walk through an airport style detector put my belt and shoes back on, walk through the back door to the outside back to my truck, where the big metal beam is now open. I get into my truck and say hello to the guy sitting in the passenger seat with the submachine gun. I have 4 guys with submachine guns walking at all corners as I slowly drive to load.

If the nuke guys and the military do not require me to leave my license with them to enter a site/base, why the hell would I leave anything with a rental cop?

Nope. Not gonna do it. Aint happening.

They're just doing there job, but nuke guys nope. We've hauled diesel up to a base or not, in an area or not, where there's funny beings or not, where nobody in the place say we exist, but funny planes come out in the dark or not, and when you have lunch on them you might be told to stand up and face the wall for 10 to 15 minutes. But we know what we have to do and it's no big deal. If you don't want to give your ss# you have a right not to. Like Rick's company, there's a simple solution. I would never give up my CDL and that's why I always had more than that for ID purposes.

..Our CDL is valuable and needs to be treated as such. I think a company ID would be appropriate to leave (if needed).
I have my CDL/TWIC/FAST/Passport Card and they never leave my sight. Ever.... I have no problem writing down my CDL # if needed..

    Otherwise,
Suddenly there will be someone else out there with my name and credentials. It happens way too fast and way too often.

..just last week, our 'crack' team of "Loss Prevention" officers lost the main key to one of our most secure rooms. They supposedly loaned it out to someone and never got it back. There is no record of the loaning either. I asked them how they knew it was missing. I was told that an officer noticed a hook w/o any key hanging from it and realized what was SUPPOSED to be there.

They can have my CDL# and a copy all they want. They DO NOT get my SSN as that number is where you loose your identity!

I'm sorry to rain on your parade there Striker but I've been doing internet since the 70's and computers since Nintendo and am just a tad bit more knowledgeable than most and I know that my CDL is NOT in any way associated with my SSN! It won't be hacked by anyone YOU know! Food loads are a tad bit more important than freight loads due to the rules that changed a few years after 9/11 and the fear that if any tampering while in route happens YOU will be found faster than if they have to go through the company! It's a "small" rule that came out and I for one have no problem with it as I know they only have a CDL number that anyone with 2 live brain cells can make up! It's not hard to come up with random numbers so even IF some "hacker" got your CDL the chances of him getting your SSN are close to nill!

If they were so "good" they don't even need the CDL! They would have already "hacked" the State Highway Patrol or State files and have more than enough SSN's from any ticket written!

OOPS, you forgot that didn't you! Every ticket written has ALL the info a "hacker" needs to steal an identity! All of your information DOB, SSN, addy and phone numbers! Ever get a letter from an out of state attorney wanting to represent you on a ticket? Ever wonder where they got that information? LOL yep not as secure as you wish!

Time to get off the "I wont" thing and get your company to get you an ID card or make one yourself with your company logo on it and show it to them! I did and they were happy BUT when it comes to food loads I expect you'll be waiting for the load! I've still had to show the CDL! I'd rather they KNEW who was hauling my and my families food around than to blindly give it to a moron with not so pleasant thoughts in his pea sized brain! Besides most loads cost in excess of $150,000+ a load. I'd be getting your information and if you didn't want to give it then you can give up the door for the next guy in line! There is ALWAYS someone else wanting a good load even if you don't. Even when you broker a load through me I ask for a copy of your CDL. No CDL equals no load and no problem. Sorry but that's trucking in the new century!
