I've read plenty of posts advising against getting into trucking right now. But what does the immediate future hold? I know some of you keep your finger on the pulse of industry forecasts so, would you enlighten us wannabes as to what we can expect in the coming years?
Does 2010, 2011, 2012... hold more promise for those who survive?

I don't see it getting better anytime soon. I think that drivers are going to be watched closer. Have more fines. Get home less, while making less. I think the 2010 csa is just going to be the icing on the cake. I think more veterans will opt out or be put out and the newer drivers will be rode hard and when their CDL is fried they will be discarded and the next one will take his place. I also think that companies complying will be doing multiple swaps to get freight to it's destination because drivers will be out of hours.
I think this will lead to more companies folding and the price of freight shooting way up. Milk 5 bucks a gallon, etc. In time this may unfold to be able to run legal, but there is not too many people willing to stay out for a month or better and bring home about 400 bucks for doing so.JustSonny Thanks this. -
As Mike_MD said when CSA 2010 puts points against the driver they also put the points on the carrier . I doubt many drivers will be disqualified by FMCSA . It'll be one strike and you're out by many carriers then other carriers won't touch them .
With freight levels still sliding I don't see any improvement for at least 2 years and I doubt they ever totally recover . A good point was made a while back . New technology gets more products on 1 truck . Everything from LCD TV's to concentrated laundry soap requiring less trucks to move the same number of products .JustSonny Thanks this. -
I think more freight will move back to the ltl sector as most ltl companies have a system in place to move freight timely and keeping the drivers within their legal hour of service,....

I really don't know ... lots of folks live in dread of what they believe is coming ... the unexpected coming around the corner. But I don't believe that we should dread it ... while time lasts therewill be good and bad coming at you from every direction. The future does not belong to us yet ... perhaps it never will ... if it comes it will most likely be totally different from our worst fears and anxieties. I am optimistic, I don't believe that our best days are behind us ... we can't linger around the cold ashes of yesterdays camp fire ... tomorrow will be a struggle, just as yesterday was a struggle but it will be open to those tough enough to face it and carry on.

I think so,....Notarps eluded to it is his post referring to more swapped loads,..
Most ltl companies use hub and spoke system the allows drivers to run legal and be home after their shift,....JustSonny Thanks this. -
In another thread it mentions JB Hunt is moving the majority of their business to intermodal . Schneider does quite a bit of intermodal also .
