First of all, thank you for such a thorough and detailed response, I appreciate it!
I love hearing about successful stories like that one where you helped a network. It's what this business should be all about anyway!
There's all kinds of stories out there. I've had experiences with all kinds of BCOs and would never generalize anyone. It all depends on who people are on a personal level. Same goes for agents of course.
I don't understand the stigma of going through a 3PL to book loads. I honestly often get better rates from brokers than shippers directly. I believe that keeping the options open is the best way to go!
Thank you for stating those three priorities you have for an agent, I'll definitely make sure to pass these along our new agents and trainees!

Lately it seems there's always about 40,000-50,000 loads on the board that are either already covered, agent won't answer the phone nor return a message, or are duplicate postings of the same load. So when theres 80,000 loads on the board, there's about a 30% chance that any given load is an actual available, attainable load. And when theres 50,000 loads on the board, don't even bother calling unless it's on a "new since last search," or a load alert.
More and more it seems there's a "spambot" approach to most postings, and the agencies that post them also duplicate themselves with a similar spambot approach. Seems amazing to me that they'd rather field calls all day on loads they know are gone, rather than delete the covered postings and free themselves up to field calls on available loads. They apparently prefer the "that one is covered, so let's see if I can trick you into taking a different one to the same destination for 30% less money" approach.
One time I called ten different agencies (or at least agency codes) about a duplicate load posting that i already knew was covered. All ten of them promised some version of "sorry, I'll take it down right now," but two hours later, nine of the ten were still up.Last edited: Jun 17, 2021

Landstar System, Inc. JACKSONVILLE, Fla., April 21, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Landstar System, Inc. (NASDAQ: LSTR) reported all-time quarterly record net income of $77.2 million, or $2.01 per diluted share, in the 2021 first quarter, on record first quarter revenue of $1.288 billion. Apr 21, 2021
But yet they deduct $1.75 from our agreed upon rate when they mail me a check, for the paper and the stamp I suppose. Cheapos, from now on I'm asking for $2 extra. That's an extra .25 for me having to ask.bzinger and blairandgretchen Thank this. -

Is it true that they started a click-and-go beta?

From an agent perspective, I can say that it's (almost) always very important to update the customer of where the freight is currently and when the truck will be arriving/departing. I'm not saying you should be texting your location every half an hour but a simple update at arrivals/departures with an estimate ETA can go a long way with customers. It's even easier if the customer offers a tracking application, there's no need for any updates or calls. Apart from that and being overall professional when showing up at places and facilities is what any good agent will be looking for. I don't question the drivers in how they're doing their jobs, I only ask to stay updated and that's it. Therefore, I don't think there's a need for you to 'prove' yourself to anyone except yourself. Work your way and you'll come across good business contacts.
Thank you for your question!MiFamilyGuy, blairandgretchen and Speed_Drums Thank this. -
As someone on the outside. Looking around at carriers. Would Southwest regional with a van be realistic at landstar?
