Well if it were mine and the turbo pushed pull into the DPF I would wash it out with a steam cleaner.

Is that the correct way NO. But what you got to loose at that point. May get you by for a while till you can get a new one.

Sensors go haywire, Derate truck and shut you down to 50mph or less and leave you stranded in Wisconsin for four days where you get an 8700$ quote to get you going again. Want to ask me how I know? Luckily tech was able to clear codes enough for me to get home and my boss put me in another truck and I will not comment further on what happened with that
    particular truck’s one box

meant as reply to steam cleaning

We used to get our small equipment DPFs cleaned at the Cummins shop across the industrial park. If they were oil contaminated they couldn't clean them. Had to buy a new/reman from the dealer and ship the old one back in that case.

I knew that oil and coolant were bad for the emissions, but I didn’t know that a one time dowsing was catastrophic…..

I don't know if it was just the particular cleaning machine that Cummins had that couldn't clean oil. Apparently it blew out the filters and didn't bake them. Being at the end of the highway there wasn't many options back then.

the referenced truck from the OP had approximately 4.5 gallons of motor oil run thru the exhaust/

last i spoke with him, he’s replacing the turbo and hoping a clean will do it-

idk about emissions motors enough to comment on what the fix is: however, like @Cat sdp said, if i buy new I’m buying brand new and trading before the warranty is up.

One of my relatives still runs their own truck. He was telling me the best way to go is buy new, buy as much OEM warranty as they'll sell you (usually 5 years) and then dump it by year 4.

Not my way… I like keeping the old tried and true around……

But that doesn’t seem to be viable with those trucks ……

I think that's changing now. With innovations like Diesel Force cleaning, the use of APUs to reduce idling and more independents with agood understanding of these systems, reliability and longevity are up, and maintenance and down time are reduced.

Throwing $10K at an emissions system VS $165K for a new truck..... it's becoming an option if the rest of the truck is holding up.

Buying new running truck for 4 years and selling it or trading in is going to cost you.

They just don't hold their value. Figure you will get 100,000 less than what you paid for it new.
