I did a search about this engine and everything I seen was from over 9 years ago out dated and majority of the issues back then been addressed.

Who has recent experience with this engine? Majority of the trucks have had the head issues addressed that was 17 years ago and at least 11 since the last MBE was made. That problem shouldn’t exist today.

I already know about the low hp and 1650 torque which is about standard with todays trucks. I don’t care to be the first to the top of the mountain or visiting every fuel pump on my route.

Im more interested in fuel economy, reliability, parts availability, longevity etc.

The truck is a 2006 Western Star

Please only people with experience operating this engine. That I know a guy who knew a guy does nothing for me.

Run. It's gonna break down, all trucks/engines do. But you'll be stuck going to the dealer for repairs, because very few shops have any appreciable experience with that engine.

They seem fairly straight forward to work on. You can even change the heads in a parking lot.

I think majority of the horror stories comes from the head gasket issue. With the new gasket design it seemed to have fixed it.

I haven’t read anything about pistons, injectors, water pumps, fuel pumps all been about the head.

Had some info regarding the turbo and exhaust brake seizing causing low power.

The EGR fix seems straight forward with a freeze plug and the fact the ECM doesn’t control the EGR

I really haven’t seen much information on these just head gaskets, head gasket, head gasket.

If you're looking to buy, so many better options are available. If you've already bought, then no need to confirm your concerns.

Looking to buy it. It’s priced right.

I can pay for a over priced Cat or Cummins or buy new junk. I just sold my Peterbilt with a Cat wasn't really impressed with it don’t see all the hype.

Im looking for something fuel efficient and easy to work on. Don’t need high HP/Torque I have a truck for that already

Do you personally have experience with these engines?

Fuel efficiency, easy to work on, economical. That all says 12.7 Detroit in a late 90's Freightliner.

You may think it's priced right now, but I'm worried you'd see why very soon.

I have a 60 series sitting in a 1997 FLD with 400k on it. Im just trying to get a year out of this truck get me through the winter recoup some cash before I do the swap.

The WS has 850K on it so majority of the issues were probably addressed already. It has a reman 13spd with 150k on it, rebuilt rears, brakes within last 6 months air bags and shocks same time. Fifth wheel rebuilt last year. All with receipts

Guys retiring and only asking $19K he's the original owner

I had a 2007 Century with the MBE but I never had it long enough to gain an opinion. Used it for end dump 2nd month out driver laid it over insurance claimed it as a total loss. I know during the time we had it we never do any repairs to it.
