Forgive the delay.... I'm still figuring this system out.
I posted a question under the newbie section, two actually, but I'll direct one of the questions to you. I've been looking into a certified Master Broker Certificate program at a tech college in Arizona. This program teaches the brokering business, as well as the Agent authority, etc. They boast the ability to negotiate "retail" shipping rate directly with the shipper and the ability to broker out excess loads. With this knowledge do you think one, entering into this industry now would have a chance at profitability if one entered with little overhead?

I looked into the program before. I think its like $600.
The government doesn't recognize any master broker certificates, just a property broker.

There are quite a few problems I see with this 97k weight limit.
    1. In the end they will try to get you to pull that for the same rate as now.
    2. Alot of places can barley get a loaded spread axel in because of limited space you think they are going to change, no it will be just another problem for the driver tring to fit a bigger heavier truck into a unreasonable spot.
    3. We used to do heavy haul 97k gross is alot, enough to eliminate quite a few fresh outta school drivers.
    4. They allready cant keep the roads up you think there bad now wait untill everybody is grossing 97k.
5.The truck wont last as long.
    6.More fuel.
I could go on all day but its a bad idea in my opinion coming from someone that has handled a truck grossing that kind of weight on a regular basis in the past.

I handle close 120k gross almost daily with steel and have 2 other trucks that haul grain in the 90's and 2 others that are almost always legal with lumber. The maintaince and fuel consumption between all of them are negligible. Tire and brake wear was up on the heaviest truck when only on 5 axles. Bought a 4 axle trailer and the wear went down considerably. Sure some costs went up due to the added axles that needed brakes and tires but brakes are cheap and tires on lift axles last a long time and the added capacity made my rate higher.

Also just because the limit is 80 or 97k, you don't have to haul that if you don't want to. Michigan's limit is high but only 14% of trucks are registered for over 80k and only 1% for over 160k.

Find me a job that I can do that will pay me the $40k-ish a year i make, and I'll quit my job RIGHT THIS SECOND. (im about 2 hours from home :p)

Last "permanent" (seemed like the company was going under...) position i had paid $50 a week. YES, FIFTY US DOLLARS A WEEK.

The average mexican makes about that much, a consignee once told me.

I quit there to work for covenant, got sent home from orientation, but I knew i'd be trucking in a few weeks so i just worked for a temp agency....and the economy is so bad where i live, even the temporary "we charge you $20 an hour and pay your workers $8 an hour" agencies dont have work...I had worked there a couple years ago and the branch manager there knew i was NEVER late/absent from work...if i was some new guy, i wouldve never been called in. I wasnt working taht much but it averaged around $100 a week.

...So, tell me where to apply and I am going home TONIGHT.... :p

Michigan intrastate plates for 54k cost approximately $12,000 a year. I couldn't even imagine getting a 160k plate.

I bet theres a lot of michigan trucks rolling well beyond their declared weight...it's pretty easy to get away with that kind of thing in southern michigan....
