Was wondering if any of you knew where to get a decent rekeying kit for a 579? Been meaning to get it done, because right now it has 6 diffrent locks and keys. With the drivers door and ignition being the only matched set...and yes i bought it like that. I would love to get them all changed to the same key, doubbly so if i can get locking fuel caps that match. Was going to do it at the dealer but they wanted over $1500 and the 3 local locksmiths i called up dont work on CMVs for legal reasons.

I had a key left in my truck by peterbilt it opened any of the 3 579’s the company had. Yet the regular key only opened mine. I should’ve kept that key instead of returning it to peterbilt lol

Wonder what their legal reasons the locksmiths are giving. The one I deal with never said a word about being a cmv.

According to the one i asked, city regs require a permit that they dont bother to get due to how few CMVs come through. Says he gets asked to replace the locks on them maybe once a year and gets called to pop a door maybe once a month if that. Just not worth the cost or hassle for the permit.

Not a big deal because all my locks DO work. Just annoying that the glovebox has one key the drivers door and ignition another. the passenger door a third. The drivers side.box has a fourth the passenger side box a 5th and the battety box the sixth.

    Makes it a hasstle sometimes.

I get it, stranger permits have happened to be needed.

I have two vehicles where I have three different keys for the vehicle.

My new ‘old’ chevy came without keys and the new beater truck are all going to be rekeys because they use the same type of key.

the eBay link looks the best solution.

Maybe take the locks out and to the Lock Smith and then it’s just locks. More of a pain but beats $1500 at the dealer.

I actully tried that. He saw the peterbilt keys and refused to service them. Not a big deal though i just sent an email to that seller seeing if he has 7 matched locks and if so to quote me on selling them as a kit.

No power locks? The only one I actually need a key to open is the baggage door on the passenger side. Everything else unlocks with the key fob. I figured those were standard by 2017.

It does have power locks to the drivers doors but the one on the drivers cargo door is shorted out. Keep meaning to fix it but if im going to have it ripped open anyway id rather do both at the same time. Otherwise the glovebox, passenger cargo and battery box arent powered.
