Hello everyone.
I am in the process of getting my own authority, currently I am shopping for insurance. When I talked to progressive insurance they said they can not insure container, only the chassis because container is not part of chassis. Is this true? How are you guys insuring your trailers?

The containers are owned by the steamship lines or railroads. Most of the time so are the chassis. You can buy your own chassis and insure it though. I suggest running intermodal via leasing with someone for a little while before you go any further. There is still so much more to learn. Also, if you don't plan on getting more than five trucks for your authority don't waste your time. Most of the steamship lines won't even look at you until you can handle some sort of volume.

I'm not trying to set up new accounts or anything with intermodal, I already work with company that dispatching us loads from rail. I was leasing this truck and I'm still running on previous owners authority. So now I am in process of getting it under my own authority .

This is true. My buddy hauls containers out of Savannah and had a really hard time finding insurance for UIIA requirements. There is an agency out of Jacksonville that really helped him find a competitive price with A rated insurance. Look up 925 Partners insurance and ask for john wallace. They are registered with UIIA and all that.Speed_Drums Thanks this.

called interchanged equipment as a rider on your auto liability; covers the chassis and the can BUT may only pay ACV [book value] and not the depreciated value the chassis and/or box owner wants. The container, unless fairly new, is usually a cheap loss but a twice rebuilt 2001 chassis, each rebuild is considered in the DV so you can end up with insurance saying a 2001 chassis is worth three or four thousand and Megabucks Steamship line wants $14,000.00 due to the expense of two total rebuilds on their books.
'Flo won't cover all that! LOL
Then there is cargo...
Without this coverage on your certificate, UIIA won't bother. -
What is the name of the company that we can work under with our own authority

You would need to check with intermodal carriers in your area
