Hi, looking for your pro opinion.
My Pete 579 has dead batteries and a Hood Latch switch problem.
So I am thinking of just buying a small generator , maybe 2000 I 2500 watt. Hooking it up to the bunk AC compressor the smart air runs, if it worked.
As I understand it the smart air APU uses the inverter to power the compressor with AC voltage.
Any thoughts on how to hook this up?
Can I just run the 110 volt ac from a generator , something like this one Generac Power Systems - 2200 watt GP Series Inverter Generator - 7117 , right to the compressor in bunk ?
Was going to have hood latch switch replaced and be AGM batteries but that does not seem to be a good fix since might not work anyway.
Smart Air AC ran on generator

Paccar entire smart air system runs off 12VDC. It does not use a power inverter.
markk Thanks this. -
Ok. I read something earlier , but I think it was the Pete with a different control. [ Browser messed up. Now I will finish post ].
It said the smart air ran 12v to the inverter. The inverter ran 110 to the compressor.
But if it is just 12 volts then I think a 500 buck 2500 watt generator would work just fine to run compressor.
I don't see any reason to buy 1200 bucks in batteries that don't last if ran down below 60%.
But , anyone see a problem with using a generator to power it ?Last edited: Jul 5, 2021

If you are going the way of a generator, save a ton of money and buy the best on the market. Predator generators at harbor freight.... no joke! Consumer Reports and several others rate it at the top with dependability and reliability. I own the 9000ish watt to run my mig welder in the field along with air compressors and other stuff. I have a 3500watt that I use for smaller stuff with other projects. Never bought a battery for the button start because it takes 2 pulls if it has been run out of gas or 1 pull if the gas was left on. The big one has about 1500 hours on it... never misses beat. This one also runs 4 window ac units, 2 refrigerators and a deep freeze as well as 2 tvs, lights, phone chargers, etc during power outages. I have been through numerous other brands including Generac and Honda. Predator has them all beat! 100%
Now, on the truck... you can use the generator for 120v power for your stuff and get a decent battery charger to keep them charged while sitting. I wired several receptacles in the sleeper for easy access. If you just want a generator mainly to keep your batteries charged.... don't waste your money. Buy a couple of 100w solar panels and the charger to hook to your batteries. I know a guy that put 4 on the back of his truck and has worked great for about a year now... he bought his panels and charger from harbor freight. He runs a 3000w inverter, microwave, fridge, tv and such along with the battery powered cab comfort system. They keep the batteries charged all the time... he was dealing with 110° heat and the ac killing the batteries in about 6-7 hours. The solar panels fixed that... and they are facing the trailer, not the sky. I swore it wouldn't work but I was proven to not be a solar power engineer.
If you do go the way of a generator, I highly recommend an inverter generator from HF. They are a bit more money but rather quiet.
Then there's always Thermo King tripac evolution... with their financing, it's affordable. This is my personal choice hear....... tripac makes less noise than carrier comfort pro. -
I looked at the HF one. Had good reviews.
But I was hesitant because I bought one, different brand from them. It was junk. Ran less than 3 minutes and seized up.
But glad you mentioned they are good. That will likely be what I get.
Might install 4 regular batteries where my AGM apu batteries were. Tie them into the truck batteries for extended power. Screw the apu. -
I wouldn't hesitate to try the group 31 lead acid deep cycle marine batt at probaly 1/3 the cost of AGM.
Be carefull tying all the batts together or make sure you have a backup plan for being completely dead in the mornings.
Course if you have your gennie, youll be all set.spsauerland Thanks this.
