I just started OD p&d driver in Chicago suburbs. I just went through 1 month of training with a trainer driver and now going on my second week on my own. So far they have been very fair to me. Started me out at $25 & look forward to my 1 year anniversary raise to $30.53 /hr.
I heard but am not sure of this that since I was just hired 2 months ago I would not get the annual cost of living raise this coming September HOWEVER they will add it to my 1 year raise once I reach that milestone.
I'm not sure if this is true or not but if it turns out to be true I would consider this to be a very generous move by OD

Well that's encouraging! I'm not about to ask management I'm to new to complain about raises - I'm just trying to do my best and get into the routine which after almost 2 months if being there I'm finally starting to feel like I understand the daily operation from a-z
Considering 3 months ago I received my CDL, could not back or shift worth a dam I'm feeling pretty good where I'm at right now. Great company to be with starting out in the LTL business so far

A couple of reasons. The biggest one is my bring able to be home daily with weekends off. To start off you have to take the later in the day shift starting from 11am until when your finished around 9-10pm (on average for me) everybody from my understanding who started p&d had to do this - put in their time and move up in seniority so you can get your start time from 11 to earlier in the morning. This is not just OD - many LTL carriers from my research have a very similar policy.
I picked p&d also because most linehaul starting out will be the night shift - I did not want to be driving 9-10 hours every night.
I also like p&d because it is different every day, your not just sitting in the truck doing your same boring route day after day in a linehaul position- for me this helps the day to pass much quicker.

    Sounds good,
I currently live in New Jersey
They have a terminal 35 mins from the house. Thinking about doing the training program, but you have too work on the cross-docks while training.

I did it a little differently. I went through a outside school to get my class A - state of IL paid for it on a grant. I applied to OD while I was still in school and got the job contingent on getting my Class A license with all endorsements & would have to go through 4 weeks of training with a OD driver before being let loose on my own. Im not sure if where you live OD is hiring right out of school or doing only the dock to driver program.
One other plus as I see it is I'm not certified through OD forklift program so I do not ever have to load a truck - ever.
If you are cross trained through OD dock/driver program you are subjected to the terminal managers desecration if you are needed to work on the docks (even if you have started driving yet or not) we recently lost a bunch of dock workers so the manager took about 5 p&d drivers off of driving and put them back on the dock until they were able to catch back up.

I wanted to work for them but can't.
    They don't allow pets.
Yeah I admit the cats own me.

I have a cat he stays home 12 hours a day alone - I put the radio on and leave faucet dripping for him if he wants his food - dad has to work!
