I think the reason is Interstate Highways system, something they dont have in Europe. The difference is no need to hit the brake pedal every minute. Heck, after million kilometers my original brakes are just 20-30% used (thats right, 70-80% LEFT). I don't feel like want better stopping, it feels just fine, most of the time jake brake is enough. I could use some more torque/hp though. Driving conditions are so much different here and there...

The Scania's are great driving trucks, plenty of power and handle really well. On the down side they are very cramped, sleeper not very big and gear stick right up against your leg. I cant speak to the driveability of US trucks yet, but if they are close to a Scania i will be very happy.

until a few years ago, some manufacturers offered jack brake (daf renault, maybe iveco)

now all have their own engine brake
Scania is only manufacture that does not offer the engine brake so exhaust brake only......(Their philosophy is that the engine used to pulll not to brake) example 380hp scania with 10.6L engine has 218kw exhoust brake and it can hold 44tons(97000lbs) on 6km(3.7mille) 7% downhill

    so volvo veb+ on D13 engine has a 510-520hp
    renault use same engine
    scania offer 247kw on 11.7L engine 262kw on 12.7L and 303kw on 15.62L engine ( exhaust brake)
volvo d16 on fh16 has 578 hp and is able to keep 40tons (88000lbs) to 10% downhill with 71kmh 44mph
mercedes offer Turbobrake on mercedes axor (very bad truck uncomfortable with small cabin, but very easy and inexpensive) 612hp @2000rpm on 12L engine

Volvo is the most common truck that only has motor brake.other usually have hydraulic retarder.
Scania has the strongest with 650kw(852hp)and 3500nm of brake torque (2583lb-ft)

but weak inhibitory retarder below 40kmh (25mhp)

man has pritarder to the primary front of gearbox retarder means strength depends on engine speed and cooling fluid is used for braking it has 408hp-1600nm 1181lb-ft

Volvo, Renault, Daf and Iveco engine brakes are Jake Brakes, they just use different names.

But the working principle was invented by Cummins and then sold to Jacobs. Daf engine brake is made by Jacobs..
