Sounds like you had "one of those days" dairyman. Did the farmer at least have a good excuse for you?

We ended up with about an inch of snow. No corn shelling today here. I'm waiting for my truck to warm up so I can drain the oil, should've done it last night when it was hot, but if I would've, we wouldn't have got anymore snow, and someone would've called and wanted both trucks first thing this morning. Oh well....

Kansas, can you do the kind of crane work that is involved in putting up wind turbines? Those things are big in the midwest right now.

wheathauler,.. i'm thinking more like you on the ''rates'' thing. i think around here, at least, there are too many trucks, not enough loads, simple supply and demand economics. i am starti'n to see some skateboarders leasing hoppers at harvest time the last 2 years especially. you seeing any of that in kansas?

I know what you mean, some guys I like hauling for more than others, the ones that may not have the biggest and best equipment, but get the most out of what they have.

We use Shell Rotella 15-W40, been using it for years now, never had a problem. After reading some of the posts in the garage section about oil, some guys on here don't think too highly of it. So I'm trying to open my mind up to some new ideas for improvement. The last oil samples we sent in showed slightly elevated soot content for both trucks, that's changing the oil at 12,000 miles. I ordered a Spinner II bypass oil filter yesterday for one truck, going to try that and see if it gets the soot level down, and then possibly extend the oil change interval. Also thinking about going to a synthetic or something like a 5W-40 for a little better mileage and better cold starting. But its hard to make a change when you haven't really had a problem, just want to be sure if we use something different, its a step in the right direction, not a step backwards.

I am running diesel oil in my older pickups. I have Rotella 15W-40 in one, and recently tried Vavoline Preimum Blue 15W-40 in the other.

In all the years I owned my own OTR trucks I used Rotella. I thought I would give Vavoline a try. The truck with Vavoline is a Dodve with a V-10 engine. This is by far the best oil I have ever used. This truck truns over and starts easier in cold weather, runs smoother, and the engine is quieter. Best of all I am getting about 2 MPG better fuel mileage.

If this stuff does as good in a large diesel, then it is a hidden gem as far a oil goes. If I ever go crazy again and buy another OTR truck, I will definitely run this oil. I don't have anything to gain from Vavoline, this is just my experience.

I think everybody and his brother was hauling this last wheat harvest. There was definitely more trucks around than the previous year. I think most of it was because texas and oklahoma had horrible harvests and trucks came from down there.

I saw fuel haulers with hoppers during harvest...so I'm sure there was flatbedders and vans guys doing it too. I guess for some reason they thought we were making money. Hopefully doesn't happen again this harvest.

I run shell too. I've thought about synthetic oil also...would be nice on cold mornings. I'm not sure what the oil change interval is on them.

Vavoline might be worth a try.
