Pharm i'm just amazed how nice u made thru it. I'm just starting to read the thread and i'm not even in the page 10, but reading the last ones i can conclusion is that you made it! You are defenitly a hard work and a determinated personality...i start to read the forum, and i saw # begining all that guys talking bad things about, telling u won't make it, "...u will never get insurance..." and i'm glad that u made and shut up all those old negative supertruckers....
How somebody will start something without the first step?
It's Rough, i know, but i would like to inspire myself in uour xperience.

Here it is: we are a H/Wife team currently working as company driver for one of those big giant company's, we have 1 year of OTR experience wich i think is the biggest problem to get insurance. As an member of OOIDA, i called them to get advice on o/o insurance quote but they said we must have # least 2 yr of CDL to get insurance on my own authority.
Is that correct? Is that any other way to make it?
We would love to run our own authority but my big point is the insurance, any recomendatons for this? What company should i apply for insurance?
We would like to run reefer 48 states.
I heard about this Progressive limited radius (500 miles) insurance, but i'm curious about how to get one the cover 48 states.
We plan to buy trctor and trailer (reefer) and run under own authority.

Thanks for share your start up process so rich in details, pictures, numbers.. from the choice of the truck thru insurance, firs loads....thanks great job.

just a thought,im sitting here thinking how many of used have a dream of being our own boss ,owning our own trucks, makeing a liveing doing what we love to do,and what i went thru getting my truck ready for over the road, and the trials and tribeulations,i over came with help from this site and friends at the truckstops that watched and jumped in and lent a hand when i was working on my truck, the hours of no- sleep driveing, the juggleing of log books, and for what????? for some broker to jew you out of whats comeing to you,for your hard work and efforts,to just barely pay for your truck and to barely pay your bills and or watch everything you busted your butt for get taken away from some greedy jerkoff!!!!!! the hard part for me is the dream i was liveing ,i was finnaly doing what iv always loved to do,and know that im not the only one that has had his dream crushed andhad used every penny he had and then some getting it going!!!and yes i knew what i was getting into, and the odds were against me,but i must say for those three months on the road,i had the time of my life!!!feeling like i accomplished something,so proud of my rolling bucked of bolts that i put together, the pride i took in chaining or straping and tarping each load, knowing i was heading somewhere i hadnt bee before, but the part that eats me is the trucking companys get richer off use and the brokers, and we pay the price!!!!! just to have our little pice of the big world ,, my heart still gos out to you all hanging in there doing what i coudnt seem to accomplish due to lack of funds, and my friend it wasnt from lack of trying i never turned down a load and #### sure juggled the hell out of my log book to make it work and ran the wheels off my truck trying to make a buck,,,,,but this is just my opinoin,,,,,keep on trucking pharm,5mouths,medman,eskimo,wallygator,and big rayand all that i cant think of there names right now,,my hats off to you for hanging in there

You gave it a good run Dino. The problem you ran into were the rates...the lowest I've seen in some time. Two years ago you might have made it, right now very tough!

Well I'm not such a happy camper right now. Was burning the midnight oil thursday to stay on schedule, drop this load in Arcadia, LA then make it to Weeks Island by 6pm yesterday to pickup.

Well I call the dropoff in Arcadia and they tell me they pushed that load back 2 days a couple days ago and it's not supposed to arrive until Sunday at the earliest.

So the receiver is a multimillion dollar company, Eclipse is also... somehow I always get to pay for any problems on my end or others... lose that load back, idle for 2 days, basically the same as writing checks.

You'd have loved to be a fly on the wall for that conversation yesterday with the broker... he had to remind me he was a christian man and was going to hang up on me lol... actually I really do feel bad about that. It was unusual and I was very stressed, trying to put an entire Christmas together in a week and catch up in general. He did offer to get me a motel room for the two nights out of his own pocket over the ordeal. I wasn't in any mood to accept at the time... if he follows instructions well, those hotel nights are somewhere internally out of reach LMAO.

ANYWAY, if anyone is going down I-20 in Louissianna, I'm here all week, try the veal! :biggrin_25511:

Your right about progressive (no recent driving exp. for me), mine was 1300 a month for six months (14,000 tractor, 1,000,000 liability and trailer coverage) After the first 6 months it dropped down to 800 a month. According to progressive they do not offer over 500 miles (it least for my situation they did not). Call OOIDA ask them for some phone numbers of people that will insure you with your experience. There are very few companies that will insure you. Cargo insurance is seperate and is related to what you haul, not exp.

I suggest waiting until you have your 2 years OTR, keep your record clean, save for money for a tractor and a trailer. The economy should be going good by then, we are bouncing off the bottom right now but I think it will improve by late next year.
Getting an authority an everything associated with that is easy part. DO NOT pay anyone to do it for you they are rip-offs. By doing it yourself you will better understand the entire system.

The biggest scam out there is companies charge $50 or more to file your IFTA returns, when it takes only a few minutes to complete, even faster with online filings.

The more you rely on Simone else to do something, less goes into your pocket or more comes out of it! :biggrin_2559:

Having you own authority will involve more phone calls and paperwork than and O/O leased to a company, but once you get it down and develop relationships with different brokers it becomes pretty streamlined and efficient.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over telling the broker off. They're used to being yelled at and for their sizeable cut they should have to listen to you. I don't know too many truckers that haven't had a "discussion" with their broker.

Once some of these trucks exit trucking it would be worth another shot. When that will be who knows!
