COPENHAGEN -- The United States is counting on cows to help save the planet.
U.S. Secretary Tom Vilsack announced an agreement with the American dairy industry Tuesday to reduce the industry's greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent by 2020, mostly by..... convincing farmers to capture the methane from cow manure that otherwise would be released into the atmosphere.
(last paragraph of the article)
"Before, they didn't see the necessity and now farmers are finally starting to think the train has left the station on mitigating the greenhouse gases..... so how do we wrap our hands around it and get ready for it," he said.
I read the entire article Baack. I think I see the problem with convincing the farmers.
___ -
What a bunch of manure, literally...
-
So how'd the planet deal with the manure from several million buffalo before we got here?
-
Translation. Vilsack strong armed the association. The association agreed because this will weed out small independent farmers, leaving a few corporate dairy farms controlling the flow of milk.
Milk will increase in price, corporate profits will soar, the industry will be in bed with the government and get subsidies to pay for methane gas emission controls, consumers will pay more for milk. -
As if we didn't pay high enough prices for it anyway.
-
There are only a few "corporate dairy farms" today. Co-Ops control all the milk. There is no such thing as an "independent" dairy farmer. You sell your milk to a co-op or you don't sell. And as far as the price, the farmers won't see the money. Like everything else here in this country, corporate America rules.

But there's more involving cows nd the methane problem .
Flatulent cows could be curtailed by fish oils
- Story Highlights
- Fish oils added to cattle diet can reduce the amount of methane they produce
- Cattle accounts for one third of 900 billion tonnes of methane produced annually
- Methane is 20 times more powerful at trapping solar energy than CO2
