The Smokey Mountain Truck Stop was purchased by Travel Ports of America back in 1986 by E. Phillip Saunders the owner of the original Truckstops of America, Travel Ports of America and possibly Roadway Travel Plazas in New York state. He is still alive in Rochester, NY and I have had the pleasure of a phone interview with him a few years ago. He is a fine gentleman and a very successful businessman. He knew how to make a truck stop work and was very respectful of the people who made his truck stops work, the truck driver.
