I'm currently a company driver for FedEx Freight and I'm considering getting my own authority to become a owner operator. I am thinking about setting it up to get started in either January or March of next year. When is too early to start the process? I know it takes a month or two to be approved once the application is submitted. I couldn't find any info as to what issues there maybe if I apply and get my authority but don't use it immediately.
When to get the process started for getting own authority.

Typically new entrants are not paying 10k to 12k. Huge risk involved so 18k or more is not unheard of.

Start now. As a new MC you'll have issues picking up loads, but a 6 month MC has more options. I was stuck in Fargo 2 weeks ago because of this. Bad area to begin with, bit several good paying loads I couldn't pick up due to MC age.
If you're leasing on though, no worries, and no need to start paying insurance early.
