I'm currently a company driver for FedEx Freight and I'm considering getting my own authority to become a owner operator. I am thinking about setting it up to get started in either January or March of next year. When is too early to start the process? I know it takes a month or two to be approved once the application is submitted. I couldn't find any info as to what issues there maybe if I apply and get my authority but don't use it immediately.

    Join OOIDA.

Pay them to do your Authority for you.

They will explain everything to you they will make sure everything is done correctly it is positively the best approach for you.

The insurance is the biggest. I would start talking to insurance companies to get a quote. It will more than likely only be three available OOIDA, Progressive, Berkshire that will insurance a new authority. All the best on your journey

I checked into Progressive and they were wanting $25k for insurance. Contacted 2 Berkshire agents and one said he'll get back with me on quotes and the other said ballpark he expected was no more than $15k (more suspected in the $10k-12k range). He couldn't give me an exact quote though until I got a DOT number. Tried contacting OOIDA but I guess it must have been late in the day and I could only leave a message after the operator transferred me. I did go ahead and become a member though. Thanks for the advice!

Typically new entrants are not paying 10k to 12k. Huge risk involved so 18k or more is not unheard of.

Start now. As a new MC you'll have issues picking up loads, but a 6 month MC has more options. I was stuck in Fargo 2 weeks ago because of this. Bad area to begin with, bit several good paying loads I couldn't pick up due to MC age.

If you're leasing on though, no worries, and no need to start paying insurance early.
