I have been here lurking here for the past few months. Just trying to gain as much knowledge as possible before jumping into trucking as a new career. After 29 years running a body shop, I decided it was time for a change.

I finally made the decision to get it going. I will start school at 160 Driving Academy in San Bernardino in three weeks. I also made the decision to start with Schneider as my first company. All of the information on the forum really helped a lot in making this choice.

    Thanks

Well, not to be a wet blanket, but you want a change, you're going to get it. I can't think of anything that transfers from auto body to trucking.( unless you have an accident, and can fix it before the boss finds out) The "wet blanket" part, it's long hours, mostly sitting today, away from loved ones, friends, ball games on Sunday afternoons, all the things you may have held dear, go out the window. Social media and cell phones have helped some, but many aspects of trucking haven't changed in 50 years, and you may be shocked at what goes on. Poor expensive food, poor or no bathrooms, long waits loading and unloading, weather,,,THAT'S the biggie. You'll find, it's nuts out there, and only the most dedicated( or desperate) make it. It's not all bad, I'm sure you've had enough of body work, and a driving job may be just what you need. Just don't expect too much right away, takes a good year to even experience most, and many( almost half) never even make it a year. Good luck, you came to the right place.

I totally agree with that. Sometimes the money is too good for mega's, but it would be nice to put california on ice for 10 years. Just let them figure out their own problems. Do not involve the other States unless they are blue like them.

Haha, I live in SoCal. Guess that is one strike already. I don't like it here, but I have a good chunk of dirt to call home.

I know this will be completely different than the body shop thing. That is a good thing. I have been doing the same stuff for almost 30 years. My wife travels a lot for work, and our kid is in the Coast Guard, so just us at home. We actually have worked together for most of that time, so some time apart might be ok.
Her schedule will allow her to ride along sometimes too.

I know this will be a new experience for me, so I don't have too high an expectation for the first year. Just want to get my time in, and see what I can learn.

There is nothing wrong with driving in Cali. Just south of salians.( spelt wrong I'm sure) you really gotta be on your toes. Espacisally i40. I personally know two people who can't drive in Cali because of speeding on I-40.
Up north towards Hayward they are still strict just nothing like they are in the south. Get your cdl's keep up up dated.
