CB Goes FM

The funny thing is the Brits lobbied for years to be allowed to use AM instead of FM.

 

The AM v FM debate: it's what you ain't got that you want. But both are good:

it would most likely be done the same way SSB is done...you can use it on any channel you want, but most people will go to certain channels to talk on it...IMO it's "not" something worth looking forward to... If it was all that great, then why would the Brit's be wanting to use AM legally? "Because FM sux!"

 

FM doesn't suck. It just doesn't have the same range. That might not be so bad since nearly all CB conversations nowadays happen in truck stops and at traffic backups anyway.

I think the reason why fm isn’t used in the 11 meter band here in US is the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.

 

Hmmm... sounds like the CB industry is trying to give the GMRS industry a run for their money. I believe GMRS radios are FM.

 

No, FM vs AM is irrelevant as far as SWR. An antenna doesn't care about FM or AM, only the frequency of the signal. You're getting a high SWR because your SWR meter can't read FM if it's for CB, as that is an AM signal. You would need an appropriate SWR meter for that frequency, FM. FM or AM only have to do with the modulation type of the signal, not the frequency. SWR only goes up if you change frequencies, not modulation types. It's the same reason why when you have an illegal CB amp if you want to use it on AM or SSB you have to select that with a switch on the amp itself.

Just like TV antennas don't care about digital vs analog signals. TV is still the same frequencies that it's always been. Just the TYPE of signal sent at those frequencies is different. This is why there is no such thing as a digital "HD" antenna. The old TV antennas work perfectly well with the new digital signals. You just need the proper receiver inside the house to convert the digital signal into a picture. Whether or not the signal is HD or not is determined by the transmitter, not the antenna on the receiver.
