My daughter is 25, has had a hard time with jobs. Did well with a couple, gotten discouraged with a lot. Partly her temperament but she is finally mellowing out. She told my wife she might like to try trucking. I could maybe see her doing ok with it. Working alone so much might suit her better than working on teams. She was a careless driver for a time but has gotten a lot better on that. She has driven forklifts her last 2 jobs & had no accidents, a good thing.

Is trucking a good choice for a young woman these days? Would most of you do it again if you were starting over? Would you want your children to get into it?

What is the best way to get started? Work at a terminal first?

    Thanks for any guidance.

Yes, is my answer to all your questions.
Everyone has their own best way. If she can afford paying for a tech school. That way she owes no one.
    Good luck

That’s one of the problems we professionals face today is people who can’t make it doing anything else in life, want to get in to truck driving. It’s not that easy and glamorous high paying job that most people think it is. And it’s definitely not for most people.

I know some Estes terminals train fork lift drivers right off their dock. And fork lift starts over 20/hr. May be a good way to get her foot in the door. Otherwise she’ll be over the road for weeks at a time her first year or so.

If you have a bad temper and cannot control it, avoid trucking, as you will be tested everyday. On the other hand, you have to try it for yourself to really know.

I wanted to be cop, I passed all the tests, except the psychological test and / interview, I don't know if the written test scuttled my chances or if the psychiatrist picked up on the fact that I'm a nut, but at least I know I'll never be a CHP.
