Flatbed is a bed, you have to go fenders only if you want to be a tractor?

Newbie here - can anyone explain the benefit of being a tractor instead of having a bed. I was not aware of the 65 ft rule (?) and I have already invested in a F350 crew cab long bed (not CC, 172in WB) that I was about to buy a steel flatbed for. At this time I can reconfig to a tractor, however I was counting on using the flatbed to haul smaller hot-shot loads around town without the need for a trailer (2 to 4 pallets on an 8ft x 8ft steel flatbed). This 65 ft rule concerns me bcoz I already bought a GN 35+5.

Depends on where you live and where you run. Each state has it's own often confusing mishmash of regulation, which are often overridden if you are on an Interstate because that's federal. For example there may be a straight truck length limit, trailer length limit, overall load platform length limit, overall combination length limit, and kingpin to last axle limit, or whatever any politician can dream up to bring in some revenue as you pass through their lovely state.

By the way, if all you need to pass is a shorter gooseneck, bobbing it off is WAY easier than adding it in, and won't compromise the integrity of the structure. Half a day in the fab shop and some artful painting will get it done on most of the GN trailers out there. You wanted a 30K coupler anyway, right?

yes 30k - great info - I am still digging into this and taking measurements. My idea to haul smaller loads is actually my attempt to ensure my equipment can do anything at anytime - I have serious doubts I would use the flatbed for palletized cargo - it is more likely the only time the truck will be used is if its hooked up to the gooseneck anyways, I am not against a tractor only rig and if having a tractor only truck has some benefits that outweigh the practicality of the flatbed I'm all ears

I thought there was one more requirement, something about the wheel wells, but I don't remember the particulars. Anybody?
Edit: what does "fenders only" mean? Can someone post a picture?

Hey Lite bug, thanks for your response. Do you have any particular vendor in mind?

Big Tex is way behind, many of their dealers don't even know when they will be getting equipment in. I am not sure how high of a priority a one-off specification will fair when they cannot keep up with the current demand. Diamond C also seems out of the question because of the particular design, but I don't know that, they might just be the ones to help. Please advise. Thanks
