Don't get me wrong. I completely agree with you and Omnitrac should be building these things with switchable radios for the price they charge. Or a discount or whatever.
If you stick with Omnitracs you might want to look at the XRS line. It uses a cell phone (just get a refurbished at any cell phone store) to do the user interface and radio.

Personally I would never recommend Omnitracs. Don't get me wrong, they are nice units. It's just I would never buy a Porche when a generic SUV gets me to the same place.

I actually tried a cheaper solution at first where there is a tablet that blue tooth to the plugged in thingy ma jig but it would lose connection and the whole deal would go into a fit of non compliance. Especially going through tunnels in the north east. After I wasted a few k on that then I decided to go more industrial so to speak and it’s worked well but at a cost.

Same thing here, started out with Keep Trucking, but switched to a vendor with geofencing options for our ag exempt runs. Well, the geofencing worked, but we ended up with 10 or more unassigned driving events PER DAY, and the company just washed their hands of it, no support to even diagnose the problem. So that’s a couple of hundred bucks for hardware we’ll never get back.

But both the Keep Trucking and the My20 from Konexial we are using now have been pretty fool proof. No dropped connections, no unexplained driving events. As long as the driver doesn’t step on the iPad, anyway.... the back office of the My20 is much better than Keep Trucking, but it’s also twice the monthly subscription.

I feel like you are getting some bad info from your Omnitracs rep (or somewhere else if you have not discussed the situation with them) that could relieve some of this. Oh, and please know that I'm just updating some of the info in the last few posts for informative purposes and am not downplaying your dilemma at all.

    - Omnitracs has not shipped a new unit with 3G in it in a couple of years. Your units (like many others) are made before the 3G hardware change to 4G so they must be in use for a few years.
    - There IS a rebate program for your old units. Ask your rep.
    - A brand new IVG unit is $799 INCLUDING cable. (without rebate)
    - The monthly plan starts at $24 for the basics. If you are paying $50 then there are add-ons in your plan.
    - ATT is the first of the cell providers to shut off their towers in February 2022. Verizon in December, Sprint/T-Mobile haven't said yet.
    - For anyone who wants to stay with Omnitracs but not upgrade their IVG, then the is the XRS device and the hardware is free. Bring your own tablet or smartphone like most others.

I hope that you have an open door with your rep because he or she should be helping you with this.

They setup a google hangout meeting. I’ll bring up all of these points that you mentioned.

They are the ones who emailed informing me of all of the things I’ve said. I have proof in emails of them saying no rebate.

Also, the units I’ve bought in the last couple years must be refurbished units and not brand spanking new units.

Wired Truck or whoever it is who sells this stuff for Omnitrac definitely isn’t selling me 799 new unit plus cable. Far higher.

I guess we’ll see what they say on the conference call. In the emails it says next spring they won’t work. I do appreciate the info though!

Edit: oh and yes there are a couple minor upgrades but really nothing that you don’t need anyway. The bare bones version must be extremely bare bones!

I use omnitracs with the ivg unit. 30 bucks a month with taxes for the log book service. If you want any ad ons you cant get the log book service that cheap though. Had the unit since 2017 and its not one that will stop working next year.

ATT is indeed shutting down their 3G towers at end of February - that is what the email is referring to. I hope that the conference call clears things up because there is definitely a 4G upgrade rebate going on right now for existing customers with 3G units still in their fleet.

The "Basic" plan for $24 - $29 per month provides the things you need: Driver Logs, live Vehicle Tracking, Driver messaging, State miles report for IFTA, and Vehicle Inspection report. Yours must have weigh station bypass, or GPS navigation, or something else added.

They said we had to sign up for a 3 year Contract agreement and that instead of $800 per unit, that it would be $450 per unit if we traded in the 3g ones. And that the monthly would go to like $47. And no... don’t have any weigh station bypass, no gps, nothing like that. Only thing we have is fault codes, which doesn’t even work.

Also, you said $800 was with cables, we already have the cables. They act like without a 3 yr contract it’ll be $800. Something really fishy is going on here because my experience is nothing like you describe.
