I was talking to a driver licensed in Tn. a few years back, who had an unpaid ticket in Ca. He got pulled in in Az. and was told Ca. had suspended his Tn. license and that suspension was currently in the system in all 50 states. He was put out of service on the spot. Never did figure out how Ca. could suspend a Tn. license.

Correct. I took care of this as soon as I found out about it. Seems they (San Bernadino county) were cleaning out old files-and this turned up. But you have to stay on top of your license, never assume the company paid, get proof. Years later it can come back and bite you..This took 8 years !!! And NO, there is NO Statute of limitations. Peace !!

Your license can be suspended without you knowing about it, absolutely and also by order of another state. Stuff happens.:biggrin_25510:

Any state can suspend your drivers license for failure to appear or failure to pay a ticket.

If you ever got a ticket that a company said they will pay it I would be very worried and contact the state you got the ticket in and double check to see if it WAS paid! Now is NOT soon enough!

NEVER EVER rely on a company to "pay" a ticket for you even an overweight one!

PAY it your self and let the company reimburse you for it! Anything that has anything to do with your livelihood you should take responsibly for! As you saw above he "trusted" his company and now he's having to pay the price!

NOTE/TIP: NEVER just pay a ticket! Get a lawyer! They can usually have a moving violation reduced to something less and with the new CSA2010 laws going into effect hiring a lawyer even though expensive will not be as expensive or as damaging if you loose your CDL due to too many points! And 90% of the time you do not even have to show for court. He will handle it and let you know the out come.

If you decide to just pay a ticket follow these simple steps. Make a copy of the ticket, both sides, a copy of the money order made out to the court and keep the receipt, and send them Return Receipt Requested. Keep these in an envelope stapled together in your briefcase and keep it with you in the truck so in case you do have a problem with the police while on the road you can produce these and it can help to get the problem straightened out faster.

    1- Yes

    2--- yes

    3--Yes

Now let me explain what I see on a daily basis. What my experience has been is this. Driver "A", let's say has a Florida CDL. Driver "A" drives up and down the east coast and gets stopped in Virginia and New York and receives citations. Driver "A" fails to pay the citation on the due date and is suspended by New York and Virginia. Now I have seen where on occasion Driver "A'" then pays the citation in New York and Virginia, thus satisfying the obligation. However, both State's require a reinstatement fee to clear the license/privilege status from Suspended to clear. So when I stop Driver "A" and run a 50 State license check on Driver "A" he shows a suspension in New York and Virginia. Thus Driver "A" is disqualified by 391.15a and is placed out of service and arrested for drivin while suspended.

As for knowledge, 391.15 requires no knowledge of the suspension. Your notice was the citation Driver "A" received. Now certain State's statutes require a certain degree of knowledge. With that being said the judges that I go in front of on a regular basis, will convict a driver on the mere fact that the individual received a citation and ignored that summons. Best advice I can give is, if you get a ticket, take care of it. Go to court or pay it. It will save you a big headache in the future.
